I'm an AB540 student and I don't know how to navigate this SIR process (for LA). Would I turn in the affidavit before I SIR or after?

If anyone has any information about the matter, that would help a lot, thank you.

I’m AB540 too. Im glad to know there’s at least one more person.

I feel better too haha
I emailed the Registrar and I’m planning to talk to my transfer counselor soon (he does AB540 stuff at my cc thank god). I’ll let you know what I find out!

thanks im going to talk to my counselor as well

On the same boat, how are you guys planning to pay for your classes? It’s like ~30k and we can’t get any financial aid.

In the same boat as you guys. And yes having no financial aid sucks but fortunately my parents are helping me out.

The only option I know of is a private student loan that Wells Fargo offers. If you know of a US citizen that can sign for you, you can use that. I’ve talked to a couple other people in our situation and they have successfully used this option. That said, you need a USC that you trust (and who trusts you) and… it’s a private loan so…

I mean, yeah, you can try working or getting your parents to help or looking for scholarships, etc.

I totally forgot but you need an ITIN as well.

Ah, I see, thanks.

On another note the California assembly might be passing some legislation that lets us get Fin Aid. I’m not sure if Jerry brown will veto it or not though.

I don’t know, viral. I’m just going to try to get through college. My mom is going to marry a USC soon but I can’t get a green card under him as I’ve aged out. Hopefully something will pass by the time I graduate, or my boyfriend will propose lol

haha gl with that.

Haha thanks. Right now though, I’m just confused about the SIR stuff. Do you know anything?

I’m on the same boat as well. I tried going through the SIR process but didn’t want to mess anything up so I left it for now. I don’t know anybody at my CC that deals with AB540 students so please let me know what you guys find out! Thanks!

I found a packet a while back regarding this. It’s for UC Berkeley, but I’m sure some of it coincides with LA stuff http://students.berkeley.edu/apa/apa%20home/eaop/files/12-15-07/AB%20540%20Packet-for%20students.PDF

Thanks viral! That has a lot of great info!

So the Registrar and my counselor both said you should SIR (being truthful and everything), and then send in the affidavit!

my parents are legal residents so they’ll get loans for me.

i was also told to apply for scholarships on maldef.com

ashley are they gonna charge us more for sending the sir? like twice as much or $100 like everyone else.

also when do we submit the ab540 sheet?

Kidkrasher, you’re so lucky! I’m gonna look at scholarships too but I’m always very wary… P.s. your link isn’t working for me.

I sent in the SIR indicating I was a nonresident and everything, and I only paid $100. I think the fee is the same for everyone.

You mail in (you can take it to the office as well but why bother lol) the affidavit after you’ve turned in the SIR and SLR.

Just BTW, here’s a link to the form: http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/forms/ucnrtexemption.pdf

If you guys have any questions or stuck on the SIR, just call the number that’s on the help button. They walk you through the process!

Do you guys know if our research or volunteer opportunities on campus are limited?

@ Ashleyy…Simpson

sorry, this is the correct link as well as some other links that were given to me by another user on this site
