So, I don't know if i'm the only one to question this, but...whenever a parent browses a forum, on whichever college (it doesn't matter,) why do they always go, "my D got accepted," or "my S got in." why can't they just put daughter!!!! sorry pet peeve after 8 months of being on zee site lol.

Which is easier to type: D or daughter?

lol, it took me awhile to figure out what it meant.
I find it annoying too.

sheesh...what if daughters want to refer to their Dads and people end up thinking they're referring to their daughters?

You just answered your own question when you wrote "lol."

Parents will stop using D and S on the same day that kids stop using lol, u, ur, ru and all those others.

I'm glad you brough this up, because I'm not really familiar with CC jargon either. BTW what is meant by (bump)?

Bumping a thread is a way to bring it back to the top of the 'recently posted' list. It stands for "Bring Up My Post." Some say, however, that it refers to the 70's and you have to get up and dance every time you hear it. ;) (Some of you will know what I'm talking about!)

All the abbreviations can be found here:

This bothers me too!! But I'm sure the parents are equally bothered by our butchering of English :)

Some of the abbreviations took me awhile to get, but they never bugged me. now when u talk lik dis, it does!

Bump - It stands for "Bring Up My Post."

I've seen that used for years, but I never knew that! feels stupid I always thought it was used more literally because they were bumping the post up from the bottom.

^Lol, that's what I thought!
I had no idea it actually stood for something!

I always thought it was used more literally because they were bumping the post up from the bottom.<<

You are very likely correct. BUMP = Bring Up My Post is almost certainly a bogus acronym devised after the fact.

I was sort of guessing that....

Yeah I'm pretty sure "bump" didn't stand for anything when it was first 'coined'.

Also I'm annoyed by "D" and "S" and "DS" and "DD" because they're only used on CC, never ever seen them anywhere else.

Ah. I kind of guessed that it was a backronym, since BUMP as "bring up my post" just doesn't usually make grammatical sense when people use it. But I still feel stupid, because apparently the "bring up my post" meaning is at least somewhat well-known, and I'd never heard of it!

I've seen them elsewhere, though not very frequently. I've seen DH more, though still not that much.

(Oh, and one of my dad's nicknames for me is DD ;) )

and the parents may say that we use abbreveations, but you don't see us taking about our M or D or P's...

HAHAHA! well parents are ... fun

Some CC history:

Similar abbreviations have probably been used elsewhere, but the use of D and S was coined and established right here on CC about four or so years ago by a poster called TheDad (he's still around). He was a very prolific poster back then, and so the custom soon caught on. And he really only used D, since he has no sons.

He used it not so much as an abbreviation for "my daughter" but as a stand-in for her name, which is not quite the same thing. And which if you read it in context, is how many other parents use it too. Which is why you see parents writing "D said this" or "S did that." If you see them write "My D...." or "My S...." then they are using it as a true abbreviation.

And BTW, I have seen and heard kids refer to their parents as "the P's"
