I am wondering if ANTHRO 3AC is a difficult course at berkeley ? Shall I choose letter grade or pass/no pass ?

I took Anthro 3AC last semester with this semester’s professor. He is not a good lecturer, but his class mainly depends on the GSI. My advice will be to attend discussion and get a sense of how hard he or she is going to grade hard or easy. My GSI was good and everything I learn was from her. We had to write 3 two page papers and for the final, we had to write a 10 page paper. I got an A with no effort. Good luck!

Not sure about this semester’s professor, but I took it fall 2012 and got the whole faceload of Berkeley’s “liberal bias.” I felt like the class was just a rant against capitalism.

I don’t think I took it with the same professor, but it was one of the easiest classes I’ve taken here so I’d say take it for a letter grade.

When I took it, it didn’t seem like it had a “liberal bias”, we actually mostly talked about different tribes in eastern Africa and then some gender studies (not sure why)…but then again, as Colbert once said, reality tends to have a liberal bias.

I took the class in Fall 2010 and I agree with light shining’s opinion. I mean, I’m a liberal too, but the professor was very much invested in his own biases. Hated it (and also his belittling attitude towards certain other disciplines that aren’t anthropology).

Then again, if it turns out to be your thing, should be interesting. You should go to the first class and evaluate if it’s stuff you’d like to learn.

Personally, my GSI was a tough grader so I took the class P/NP.
