I am not a recruited athlete, but I am interested in playing football for Army. I feel that I could make a contribution to the team. I have spoken to my admissions officer by phone once, and by e-mail. He said if I want to be a walk on, he can talk to me about admissions. However, if I want to be recruited, he indicated that we could not talk. Does that me e-mail or mail? Does anyone here understand the new rules? Finally, which position would increase my chances for admission???

^^^^^
College recruiters cannot talk to athletes until the summer prior to their senior year of high school. NCAA limits the amount of times that a recruiter can talk to an athlete. However, if the athlete contacts the coach that doesn't count against the limit. At least that's my understanding of the rules.

Try contacting the football coach directly.

Service academies are exempt from that rule. Their coaches can talk to recruited athletes anytime during their junior year of high school.

For more information on the recruiting process and rules, see the recruiting section of the Guide to the College Bound Student-Athlete at www.ncaa.org, or consult NCAA Bylaw Section 13 RECRUITING, subsection 13.17 US SERVICE ACADEMY EXEMPTIONS

when you say "admissions officer" - do you mean MALO - or a field force representative OR do you mean your regional admissions officer?

Once a coach talks to you - then you are considered a "recruit" - West Point will limit your contact with your field force reps or MALO's.
In the admission office they do have an admissions officer that handles admissions for recruits.
Are you a rising senior or junior? Have you made contact with the football coach yet?

I have been talking to a field force represenatative. I have not contacted the coach. I am a rising senior. I was thinking about having my high school coach call the Army coach. I am just not sure which way to go with this.

OK - this makes sense.

Once the coach talks to you then the field force rep will probably not talk to you. That's ok. You don't need him.

If you want to play football - email the football coach.
IF the coach is interested to you - just know that you must still meet every requirement AND your application will go into a different pile.

You can call your regional admissions officer as well. They are very helpful and if appropriate he can refer you to admissions officer that handles athletic recruits.
Good Luck!
