I have some questions regarding the a-g requirements. Specifically,

Two years (three years recommended) of the same language other than English.

and

One yearlong course of visual and performing arts chosen from the following: dance, drama/theater, music or visual art

First, what exactly do they mean by "two years"? I took Spanish 1, 2, and 3 freshmen and sophomore year and they were only one-semester classes, because my school operated on a four-block, two-semester schedule. They changed this year to a traditional six-hour schedule, and foreign language classes are now full-year, although they teach the same material as before. Am I really ineligible simply because I took the courses when they were one semester each (and so only have 1.5 years instead of 2), even though I was taught the exact same material as students that take them as year-long courses?

Second, my school doesn't offer any yearlong art courses aside from AP and IB courses. I took Drawing 1 and 2 this year; does that fulfill the requirement, or does it specifically have to be a year-long course, rather than two semester courses?

I feel like I'm probably missing something obvious, so I hope somebody can clear this up for me. Thanks.

Your GC is your beat source here, but I suspect you are OK. My kids attend a school with block scheduling, 4 periods a day, and 2 quarters, or one semester, is considered equivalent to one year at a traditional high school. It sounds like you have taken the equivalent of 3 years of Spanish (although in 1 and 1/2 years). I’m not sure about the drawing classes – are they a full year under your new schedule?

No, they’re still one semester each. The thing is, as I mentioned earlier, the only art classes my school offers that are a year long are AP/IB Studio Art, and I find it hard to believe that I would be required to take an AP art class to be eligible for admission as a CS student…

But together, the 2 semesters are a full year, correct? It sounds like this should be OK, but I would still confirm with your guidance counselor.

you should be ok. When you complete the UC app, there is a box to mark if you are on a block schedule, quarter or semester. Span 1 is Span 1, whether taught over a year, a semester, or intensive course at your local community college. (as long as your HS certifies it as such)

If you are instate, you can look up your HS curriculum on doorways
