IGETC Foreign Language

On IGETC it says, "equivalent to 2 years of high school study" so what exactly does this translate to for college classes? I've heard people say that 1 year of college counts as 2 years of high school, but what if my college is on the quarter system? Does that mean I would have needed to take 4 quarters of a foreign language? Or do you just need to take one of the classes that is on the IGETC list? I've only taken one of the classes on the IGETC list (Spanish 2, I also took Spanish 1 but that's not on the IGETC list). I'm 95% sure this is alright because my counselor has always said I'm fine, but it just makes me nervous I guess. Thanks.

My understanding is that your college determines how many quarters/semesters is equivalent to 2 years of high school study. At my school, for example, one semester is sufficient.

In all likelihood, if your counselor says you’ve satisfied the requirement, you probably did. Still, verify that to be sure; your community college should openly state in their class catalog how many quarters of the class is necessary to satisfy the requirement.

Thanks for the response. It’s weird because it doesn’t specify anywhere that I can find. It just says the same thing it says on assist, “equivalent to 2 years high school study” and then lists the classes that can be used. I’ll call the counseling department today I suppose. I’m guessing it’s just like yours, but it’s just hard to imagine that one class could be the equivalent of 2 years of high school.

Wait you were right! It was in the course catalog, just hard to find. And yeah I only need one class. I need to stop finding things to worry about. Anyway thanks man.

No problem.

@music1990, I’ll tell you how it specifies, at least at my daughter’s CC. She needed to verify the equivalent of the whole second year series, and the only IGETC transferable were, for Spanish, the whole second year daily by semester (the equivalent of one whole year in one semester) or the last semester of what would be the second year. Not sure if I’m saying it right, but the gist is the transferable language class has to indicate the completion of two years. The first year courses weren’t even part of her IGETC. As she didn’t want to submit her high school records, she had to take the equivalent of two years at CC. You can also fulfill it by exam.

Another part I still am not sure about is my daughter’s IGETC said the language class had to be taken for a letter grade, but someone at the UCs said it didn’t. She took it for a letter grade, but I never quite got what the real rule was. It was not a requirement for her major.

So if you’re also saying your CC says only one class, it makes me think this IGETC might be all over the map (unless it’s the second year equivalent class).
