About the Villanofun reputation

I know that there are a few topics on it already but I guess this is for people like me who just got in. How true is this? Specific questions:

How strong is the greek system?
Are there curfews at night?
When you say you find ways to get aroud the strictness, what do you mean?
What percentage of the student body likes to party/socialize rather than study 24/7?
Is there a good amount of opposite sex interaction (hookups/relationships)
How cliquey is the student body?
Is it easy to make friends if you're from say... Hawaii?

Sorry that's a lot of questions but this is going to be the biggest decision of my life. I know villanova and vsb are excellent already, it's really come down to the social side. I'm most likely going to receive a near full ride from SMU (Hunt Scholarship) but my FAFSA EFC qualifies me for a ton of aid (my EFC is 1140) so I'm expecting that I will get a lot of money if villanova meets near full aid like the admissions west regional director said (90% is the number they gave).

I recently visited SMU to interview for the scholarship and the social scene is near perfect and they're business school is impressive too, but my heart still says villanova despite a potential full ride from SMU.

If anyone can help me out, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks. Good luck to all the high school seniors and their decisions.

Congratulations on your acceptance!!!

As a parent,I may not be the right one to give input to your concerns but here goes…
My information is second hand , but I think most of the information is fairly accurate.
I assume you will need a current students perspective on this and I welcome corrections!

1-How strong is the greek system?
Fairly active but you will not feel excluded from social scene if you do not rush.
There are parties at “sports houses” ,usually a short cab ride from campus most every weekend and getting invites is not too difficult. There are also events called ticket parties , where busloads of students go to clubs.

2-Are there curfews at night?
Not that I’m aware of.

3-When you say you find ways to get around the strictness, what do you mean?
Strictness?? Nuns and priests are not roaming the dorms!!
The school wants kids to control themself but understand that this is college and college kids drink , and some drink alot. There is VEM (ambulance) and kids that drink themself sick will get VEM’d. Getting VEM’d becomes a spectator sport on South.
The “strictness” is more bark than bite. Alot depends on the RA and most of the RA’s dont want the hassle of busting kids, they are in it for the housing. So kids drink in the dorms , getting caught depends on how obvious you are or getting extremely drunk and causing a problem for yourself.

3-What percentage of the student body likes to party/socialize rather than study 24/7?
All the kids I have come across are partying Thu/Fri/Sat , this is not a geek squad school.
But its not like the big state schools where there are parties 24/7.
That being said , academics are very important to the students and they work hard to get studies done.

4-Is there a good amount of opposite sex interaction (hookups/relationships)
Don’t know , better get this info from a current student.
Dorms are coed , separate sex by floor.

5-How cliquey is the student body?
Some pockets of cliques, but not on a high school level , but kids are social and outgoing and I don’t think exclusive.

6-Is it easy to make friends if you’re from say… Hawaii?
Unless you are a total dweeb , you will make many friends.

I am clearly biased , but I would think that you would much rather be at Villanova , near Philly and in the Northeast with your business degree that in Dallas.
Good luck

Thanks for the reply. It’s reassuring that the villanofun rumors aren’t very true, at least coming from you. I really appreciate it.

This will be the toughest decision of my life. SMU presents a ton of opportunity but so does villanova. Villanova has a lot of recognition and connections like SMU but in a better business environment, at least for me personally. I would love to talk to any students if anyone on here is a student. I can PM or vice versa.

you will not feel left out in any way if you dont rush…there are plenty of things to get involved in on campus…if you dont rush, you will still have a great time

the freshmen technically have visiting hours with the opposite sex on school nights…ie you cant be in a girls room after midnight if your a guy…CAVEAT: i have never actually seen this enforced in any way
3.if you want to socialize, you can do it just about do it every night of the week…most people go out thurs fri and sat, but it really depends on how much you want to study
4.there are coed dorms…there are quite a few relationships on campus, and there is also a vibrant hookup scene…villanova definately has that covered
5.there are some cliques, but that goes for anywhere…on the whole, most people are very outgoing and love to meet new people
6.anyone can make friends here…no one cares where you are from…there will be approx. 1600 freshmen in your class to befriend, i would say the odds are in your favor

ps im a current student, pm me if you wanna know anything more specific

EDIT: some RAs are more chill than others…i know some that will go out of their way to cite you and others that will be very helpful if and when you get written up…luck of the draw…also public safety on the whole is very helpful and understanding…that being said, watch out for the Radnor Police!!! enough said

How strong is the greek system?
1.greek life is pretty strong only in the sense that frats throw most of the parties. but its not exclusive or anything like in say, the south, where only certain sororities can mix with certain fraternities. there are some feuds, though so it can get interesting. definitely some bad blood with the frats right now
2.like the person above said its just with like visiting hours and what not.its pretty easy to get around, though as long as youre not being crazy loud or anything
3.its strict on campus but you can just go off campus to party. theres a liquor store right next to campus…literally i walked there all freshman and sophomore year…and i never had a problem buying there its just a matter of being smart and not getting caught ON campus.if you do though you usually just have to pay a fine.

4.if you want to do **** its easy. again, like the post above, you can pretty much go out every night of the week if thats what you want to do. there definitely are some people who never go out but there are so many other people who do rage that it all evens out.
Is there a good amount of opposite sex interaction (hookups/relationships)
5. not at all id say…everyone has their friends but people are generally really nice and open to making new friends
6.yes yes yes!! i am from alabama and i have yet to meet another person from there, but i have had no problem fitting right in! i know two girls from hawaii and i dont think they had a problem either

Are there curfews at night?
if you’re outside and you make a scene in front of an officer then you’ll get in trouble. but as long as you can walk past the guards in the lobby of the building and show your wildcard without barfing/passing out you’ll be fine. if you’re talking room guests then yes there are rules, but they might as well not exist. unless you’re trying to get caught, you won’t be.

strictness:
if you get caught i hope you’re not on scholarship or at least have enough $ for the ridiculous fees they have ex. charge per ping pong ball, an overall charge for having alcohol in your room, ranges from $200-700 depending if you were dabbling in alcohol or drugs (they act like the alcohol is just as bad but of course they’ll charge you less with those violations than if you’re caught with weed.) i’ve even heard $50 per condom found but that hasn’t happened to anyone yet. ntot that i know of. as for parties off campus with frats, a bunch of kids would take cabs (which communicate via radio) to parties so radnor cops would be able to tune in and stop them. i’ve been to one where they just came down and told everyone under 21 to get outta the basement and leave. if there’s a lot of ppl at the party that’s more likely to happen. most frat parties are now run by private rides. make friends with the pledges kiddos. they’ll be driving you. however if you happen to get caught in a dorm/west apartments, again, good luck i hope you have $$ to throw around.

Wow, you make it sound terrible. I have no idea now. I keep hearing conflicting reports.

it really isnt that bad…just dont be an idiot while youre having fun and you’ll be fine

“$50 per condom found”

Wow. Really? This just made me laugh.

oh please i just looked at my student handbook and theres nothing in there about condoms…thats just another misinformed rumor…besides, what imbecile would leave them just sitting out there, i just cant see it haha…im telling you, if you possess some degree of common sense you can avoid getting caught at all

nah mtreyesx1 those are just examples of the other side of the extreme (the consequences) and those are the only stories i have to share which means it’s rare… like i said, unless you were trying to get caught, you probably wouldn’t have to deal with any of that. the other extreme is that you go out you don’t get caught and you have an amazing time and you do it again the next night.
