How much did SAT/ACT prep books actually effect ones test scores? Which ones are better and recommended. Anyone have "before and after" stats?

The Blue Book from collegeboard

Those books teach you how to take the test, which imo is part of the battle.

Do a search...this is probably the most often asked question...

Well, the blue book doesn't teach you how to take the test. It has practice tests that are made up of questions from previous SATs (not actual, complete SATs that were previously adminstered, but questions from those tests used to create practice tests).

Books that teach you how to take the test are the strategy books like Cracking the SAT (they also have practice tests, of course).

^^ agreed -- the Blue Book won't help you much in strategy. It just gives you basic things, like "read carefully" and whatnot.

Princeton Review.. 11 Practice SATs. They tell you what you got wrong, and why you got wrong, very comprehensive.. answers

Blue Book builds stamina and acquaints you with the SAT test style. I found that it works best if you take them in rapid succession and a week before the test to put you in "the mode" for when you take the actual test. Once you find your groove with the practice tests, the real test shouldn't be as daunting as before.
Oh, and remember to go over your mistakes.

People have told me- the Barrons/Collgeboard/PR books work well

Kaplan Writing Workbook for the writing section... questions soooo easy and obvious that it makes you feel special.

Writing ... 550 -----> 720
