I am a senior and today one of the attendance ladies told me that colleges look at attendance and will take away your admission if you miss too much school. I have above a 4.0 cumulative GPA, I also only stay home on days where my class is online, or if it’s a day where I know we won’t be doing anything. I’ve maintained all a’s and have had no problems. Do you really think the college I’ve committed to (michigan state) will take away my admission even though my grades are up to par?
No. Colleges care about performance, not attendance.
@“Erin’s Dad” so she basically just scared me? I was skeptical at first, but I think now that she probably said that because if she said otherwise, then she’s basically encouraging students to skip their senior year.
Please be careful of one thing. Some states (and possibly school districts) have policies/laws that mandate a class cannot be passed if absences exceed a defined number; I know this was a fact in Missouri some years ago. I’m not certain if this includes both unexcused and excused absences. Under those circumstances, perfect exam results cannot overcome statutory dictates. I am not at all sure if this applies to you, but I thought a “heads up” might be prudent.
@TopTier yes, we have that at my school! If you get 15 absences in a class in a quarter (or maybe semester… not sure), you automatically fail it. I have senioritis, but it’s not that bad lol
Talk to your guidance counselor about the rules. Most school districts have rules about how many absences you can have. Also attendance is important for the school…they get state funding per student per day. If you are not there they may not get funding for the day.
@bopper I know all the rules and everything. I mainly was just concerned about if msu would be able to see and if they would judge me based on my attendance record, despite my good grades.
You have basically already been warned by your school that your absences are a problem, I would fix that. Your schedule must be light if you can miss significant time at school. To get his far and eff up would be really foolish. I think my kids schools looks that other way for the last 2-3 days, but most kids are at school now building up to AP etc testing.
@Alfonsia I wouldn’t call my schedule light… I’m taking AP physics B, AP biology, and AP psych. I never miss any of those. I’m missing my drama class, for the most part. Also, my AP bio class is online some days so I will go home those days and do work at home. I wasn’t warned, per say. I just make a joke about senioritis to her, and she commented saying how there were people who had their acceptances taken away because of low attendance. When she said it, it seemed very fabricated, especially since she told me these were 4.0 students, which I highly doubt. I currently have a 4.25 for first semester, and I am in no way struggling because of these few days where I take a break and go home.
Made a joke*
classof15, talk to your GC. The attendance lady is going to stick to the rules. She may have seen people have acceptances taken away, but it may be because they were failing because they did not attend class. Will you fail drama if you do not attend?
At my high school, the most amount of absences one can obtain is 10.
is it a case of someone on a power trip? If your GPA is as you say, you’re clearly one of your HS superstars. I’d even hazard to say that you were to approach Mich State and say you were dropping out of HS for a good reason but your academics speak for themselves, they’d welcome you with open arms. Tell the lady to drop the dramatics.
Does your attendance show up on your transcript? I know it does for my school.
@T26E4 I am 99.9% sure she said it because the school can’t just condone to seniors skipping and start using scare tactics.
@EYeager nope, just grades!
