Hi guys, I’m junior in very rigurous high school.
Since I’ve been having tough time after I moved to new school, I have been diagnosed “bipolar” therefore Ive been absent many times.
So whenever I feel very depressed, I did not go to school and stayed home. Last semester, I had about 13ish excused absences. And this semester, I already have 5 excused bsences.
I am very concerned that my poor attendance would hurt my chances to top colleges. I feel like my teachers and counselor are going to write me a horrible recommendation due to my bad attedance.
Even I get absence a lot, I managed All A last semester. I am very stressed out and nervous right now. I always try to go to school…but it is hard. I literally have no friend in school. I just started getting counseling last week. I am trying to overcome it. I hope you guys would understand me.
Any advice? Would my poor attendance hurt my teachers and counselor recommendation and chances for top colleges?
I don’t think the show on your transcript. I think it honestly depends on the school. However, you have excellent grades. I would be more concerned if you had all C’s and D’s and were missing school. Don’t sweat it. I hope someone can 100% confirm if they show up or not. Why don’t you ask a teacher at school?
In my opinion, you shouldn’t ask a teacher for a recommendation unless you know them well enough to have a reasonably good idea if they like you or not. Are there any teachers that you feel comfortable talking to about this? Your absences were all excused so it’s definitely better than if you were just truant. I doubt it would be a major problem unless you had some kind of disciplinary issue.
“Would my poor attendance hurt my teachers and counselor recommendation and chances for top colleges?” Speak frankly with them. They’re not trying to sink you. Absences per se, won’t matter to any college
Please stay on track w/your counseling. No one needs to plod along w/o aid. . Best of luck to you.
How can I approach to teachers and guidance counselor to talk about my condition?.. how can I start conversation?.. There is no teacher I am comfortable with…
I heard colleges do not favor students with mental illness. I started taking bipolar medication… Should I mention to teachers about my bipolar as well?
Depends on school district. Under certain circumstances if you miss a certain number of days you may not get credit for the class - check with your school. That’s the only way I think it would show up on transcript.
You still have time to work on those teachers for recommendations.
Go to teachers in the core subjects you are most interested in…e.g. Math/Science for STEM major, History/English for Liberal Arts and start going to their office hours/help times and get to know them a little better. Ask questions about the homework but also about your plans for college. If you are trying to get the info and keep up with the classes and are taking tests with everyone else you should be good.
