Can anyone just throw out some schools that they know to be more difficult academically to be admitted? I know in MT there is a lot of lee way given for grades sometimes but I know some schools like CMU for instance are hard to get into academically as well as obviously artistically. I am also thinking Ithaca is?
Boston University, NYU, Northwestern,
Interestingly, CMU is all about your audition. They pretty much do away with test scores and GPA for students they want in MT and Acting. Schools that do have fairly tough academic hurdles to get in might include NYU, Michigan, Northwestern. Others with pretty strong academics include American, Syracuse, Elon, Muhlenburg, Illinois Wesleyan, James Madison, Penn State and I’m sure others will chime in with more schools.
I would not put Ithaca in this group.
Ithaca is NOT a difficult admit academically - for MT, it is virtually all about the audition. I would say NYU (50% audition, 50% academics), Northwestern, and the Ivies (all BAs, of course) are the only really difficult admits academically. Most schools list the minimum GPA and scores they are looking for…
I have heard Emerson is tough, Elon, NYU, Northwestern, Muhlenberg
My D has a high GPA and ACT score. I am anticipating that this will help her get academically accepted to many of the schools on her list. What happens if she gets accepted to the school but not to the BFA MT program? Will she have an option to still attend the school as either undecided or under a different major?
Michigan has an academic threshold too. Some schools where you qualify academically will want you to attend even if not accepted to BFA (in fact, some will hound you- Ithaca was like that for my kid) others (CMU) will not. You have to check school by school.
@SongnDancemom Some schools will let you select another major, others will only admit you if you pass the audition. They admit goes hand in hand with that.
