Academic Advising at Orientation question.

Do you have a one-on-one sit down with an advisor? What do they help you with? Do they tell you what classes you should take, and help you plan your schedule? Any help would be greatly-appreciated. Thanks!

Advising at orientation is usually a brief affair to acquaint you with your assigned advisor, major requirements, and build your schedule for the next semester. It’s usually shorter since there will be other students who also need to get seen that day. If you want a longer meeting schedule one for before (or even better after orientation) to go over any questions you still have. Good luck!

Advisors will be very busy, especially the first day when they have to participate in multiple presentations both for students and parents. If you go to all meetings, including “how to transfer”, many questions would be answered there.

The first day you will mostly meet the orientation advisors, who are UT students. Academic advising will be available second day when parents are gone, but advisors will work with detailed schedule mostly with students who have special circumstances like early college high school, 60 dual credits and junior standing after Fall semester. The rest of students will have very brief meetings.
You can schedule an appointment the last day of orientation after registration time and speak with you advisor if you want.

If you are in COLA, you will not get much information about transfer to Business (UGS has better transfer advising). College advisors (not UGS) usually provide information about classes and degree plans in their own colleges only, they don’t help with classes and degree plans in other colleges. They will send you to those other colleges for information.

COLA students are usually discourage from taking any Math class Fall semester. Math classes have limited number of spaces, and UT wants all Engineering, CNS, Geosciences and Business students to take these classes first because they are pre-requisites for other classes. COLA and others can take Math later.

It would be almost impossible to sigh for any Spanish class, they are already full and waitlisted, and a couple of sections that will open, will be for FIGs, probably Spanish and similar majors.

Thank y’all for all the help!
