Registration Question

I have an orientation starting next Monday. When you meet with your advisors prior to registering for classes, do they inform you of what classes you need to take and etc in order for you to receive that degree? Such as a class lay-out: Fall- Ch301, Bio 211, Rhe306, and so on. Also, when do you sign up for FIG during the orientation and which FIGs are already filled up and available? Thanks.

You meet with your advisor the day before you register. Your pre-advisor will tell you what to take and your advisor will go over that and approve it and everything (so lame) but you really need to just take responsibility for your own **** because I've found relying on people at UT is just not a good idea.

You're thinking of joining a FIG?

It probably won't happen... UT makes it seem like they treat each Orientation fairly, with earlier Orientations having some advantages.

As the last orientation your pretty much screwed in terms of registration:

All the FIG's are full, for business only 1 or 2 obscure FIG's are available... so unless you plan on taking Advanced Calculus or Chemistry paired with Philosophy or something, your out of luck. In fact, unless you get one of the first advising times... I dare say there won't be any figs left for your orientation, and they don't reserve spots for later orientations.

Lay out your schedule? Forget it... I had no less than 4 different contingency plans for my schedule, I had TEN classes I was willing to take in the fall.

Your pre-advisor and advisor will even let your write the classes down on your preliminary schedule that they do with you: but once you actually register you'll find that 90% of the classes you want are closed or reserved for a FIG in another school at UT, also forget any seminars, all the good ones are closed out too...

My advise for planning to you: Listen to your advisors and nod politely, they might tell you something you need to know... but when it comes time for scheduling just blow through the UT course scheduler and Pick-a-Prof and be prepared for an impromptu registration.

I told you that I had 10 classes I wanted... I showed up 2 hours early for registration... when I left I had only 2 of those classes scheduled along with Ancient Egyptian History (taken out of need, not choice) and some Leadership elective that I will probably drop for a REAL class the first chance I get.

Final Word: Orientation is fun, Registration sucks, prepare to get shafted by the bureaucracy of the biggest University in the world.

yeah well, boo-hoo for us who are going to register in August:(

hey, i heard pick-a-prof was free for ut students, how does that happen? oh yeah, do u really need to register right there with an advisor, or can u just do it by yourself with your laptop?

pick-a-prof is not free, it is $5/semester. www.utlife.com has a lot of the same features but it's not nearly as good

yeah, well, if you join mobile campus, it's free.

what the.... that freaking sucks....what am i supposed to do now? why don't they reserve spots for CLASSES AND FIGs for each orientation? that's lame.

Then how does Add/Drop work after the registration? Is it not even worth it?

Actually the add/drop is not that bad. It usually takes place around 2-3 days after the tuition payment is due (Aug.16), and a lot of classes open up then. My OA said that he was able to get all the classes he wanted during this period because so many people forgot to pay their bills.

If you don't get the class you want, what do you sign up for instead? Some random electives? Thanks.

Yup exactly. I ended up with Ancient Greek History or something, but found out this morning that I got two of my waitlists.

congrats. this whole registration is getting on my nerves.

I don't think Bio 211 is a class anymore...
