Last Fall, I was enrolled in a graduate program and due to a series of unfortunate events, a heavy work schedule and an increasing lack of motivation, I stopped attending classes and failed my courses (3). I ended up being academical dismissed from the school and now I have been working the same menial job for the past few months. After looking back that the experience, I realized that I really needed a break between undergraduate and graduate school. I genuinely miss academia.

I have a few questions:

How do I even attempt to go back to school with a dismissal on my transcript from my last school?

How difficult will it be to get accepted into a graduate school related to my field?

Would it help to audit some classes or enroll as a non-degree seeking student and take some classes in my field?

I know this is an unusual situation at the graduate level but any sort of advice would be appreciated.

No don’t beat yourself up. This is not all that unusual of an issue as you will see if you search this forum for dismissal issues. I’ve been looking up similar info and there is a great deal of fantastic advice from other people replying on this forum. The general consensus is that of course, depending on the severity of your case, there will be setbacks to deal with and you should not spend too much time personalizing and ruminating on all aspects of your unfortunate circumstances. Get busy and get motivated to take some action after a few months or whenever you’ve had some time to process the situation and feel down about it, and deal with them head on and always KNOW THAT THERE IS EQUALLY ENOUGH ROOM FOR SEEING THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL AND YOU DO HAVE OPTIONS! Do a search of this matter on this forum and good luck!
^this thread is almost 3 years old. It’s unfortunate that no one replied to this thread earlier, but it’s likely that the OP has moved on or has otherwise dealt with it.
