Academic integrity: Can I change my grades pre-emptively?

If I get above a 2.0 this semester, I get academic renewal. If you were in my position, would you update the grades now?

GPA
Before renewal: 3.05
After renewal: 4.0

2013-14
GPA: 1.98
Sem Hrs: 40

2017
GPA: 4.0
Sem Hrs: 45

I just transferred back to the school where I did poorly, and my past grades will be wiped after this semester if I get above a 2.0. I’m averaging all A’s right now.

I’m torn over this decision. I’m not required to submit grades until June (I’m confident the renewal will take place before then). Doing this will significantly increase my chances.

-Do you have issues with this from a moral standpoint?
-Do you think the school would know?
-Do you think they would care if they found out I changed them pre-emptively?

I don’t really understand the system you’re talking about. But from a moral standpoint, I’d think the two questions are:

Do the rules allow you to choose when you update grades?
And, at the time you do so, are you presenting accurate information?

If yes to both, I don’t see how it’s a moral question. And I don’t know if the school will care either.

Thanks for the reply.

Q: Do the rules allow you to choose when you update grades?
A: Yes

Q: And, at the time you do so, are you presenting accurate information?
A: This is gray area I need your help with. I have been conditionally approved for renewal. Meaning my grades are renewed as long as I receive a 2.0 this semester. So no, my grades aren’t wiped as of now but I am nearly 100% certain they will be by the grade submission deadline.

What do you think?

Wait until the grade submission deadline and report what is your official GPA at that time. Don’t predict your GPA based on something that is not official.

I’m confused because you can’t change grades submitted in the main UC application, unless you mean fall 2017 on TAU.

You need to wait at least a year or more to apply AR so it can’t be regarding last fall’s grades. Maybe your CCC is different but I’ve never heard of AR going through in one semester. That said, do not change any grades.

If this is regarding courses before fall it would have been good to mention AR in the additional comments in your main application and single out the courses affected. It sounds like you maybe didn’t do that.

You could mention the exact courses getting AR in additional comments in TAU but TAU is only for fall through May 2018 so not sure how they’ll process mention of earlier terms, but I guess it won’t hurt. Mention date it will be in effect. But do not change GPA. That’s their job, not yours.

If you are talking about repeat classes when you say AR, if it’s the same CCC it should be obvious. If not, you could note in the additional comments that xxx courses are repeats of xxx courses. But do not change any grades.

Also, keep in mind even with AR applied, the grade still shows on the transcript. There’s just an AR notation. Likewise earlier courses that are repeated still show the earlier grade in the transcript. Falsifying the content can get you rescinded.

@Ohm888
You’re right. The title of the post is worded poorly. So yes, while I would not be “changing my grades,” I would be switching their status to AR. I did mention in the additional comments section originally that I was anticipating being approved for AR. Since then I have been “conditionally approved” meaning the AR is guaranteed after this semester. I spoke with a UC representative who, unless I misunderstood completely, made it sound as if updating the main application to include AR is still possible.

The reason I erroneously wrote “changing my grades” is because UC will honor another school’s decision to grant AR by not factoring those grades into their calculation of GPA. I did mean update their status to AR. Otherwise, I would definitely have to agree with @123Mom456 outright; going through and modifying letter grades would be an awful decision.

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

I see. Well then if it’s about UC application stuff (meaning not last fall onward) send the AR approval info to this email address: docs@applyucsupport.net

In the email ask if you need to contact each UC as well. Sometimes they want you to. They will let you know.
