Is it a bad idea for my two academic interests essays to be totally unrelated in terms of content and the academic interests discussed? I am having an extraordinarily hard time with these two essays because my interests are very vague and general.

I thought there was only 1 academic interest essay, and the second one was about how you would utilize them at Cornell. One way you could take is it to talk about the many opportunities available for you to find the perfect major for you.

I would try to connect them somehow. Cornell's likely to offer some sort of course that relates to whatever interest you wrote your first essay about, so just look.

Ah well, I have finished both essays and despite my efforts, they are related by the slightest of links. I think the problem was I did not write about subjects in the first essay (I believe that's what admissions is looking for), as I felt it was too general and vague, and I am generally undecided anyway. I instead wrote about an interest and talked about its academic aspects. Hopefully, that will work.

Is it also bad that I only wrote about one academic interest in the first essay? I figured 250 words were too little for me to substantially go into detail about multiple interests.

And yes, I'm definitely a Tolkien fan, and I like it when people recognize my username. Immediate common interest :)
