Dear Reinstatement committee,
During the end of Fall 2016, I got academically dismissed from the XXX due to my poor academic achievement. I was deeply disappointed with myself for the grade I received at the end of the semester; my work did not reflect what I am capable of achieving. I realized that I did not meet the standards set by the university due to some personal difficulties. During that semester, I encountered under-developed time management skills, lack of motivation and significant health challenges which, have since been addressed and are now well-managed.
I came into XXX with mentality prepared for myself to face it with determination and hard work. However, I did not expect to encounter health and mental problems I’ve been diagnosed with, such as Anxiety Disorder, Depression, and Insomnia. When I returned home from XXX, I took the first steps toward resolving my situation; I sought help from both my physician Dr. XX and my therapist Ms.XXX. I have been prescribed medication for my anxiety and insomnia which has greatly remedied my health. I also connected with my therapist often who I can share my problems with and reach a solution to take the necessary steps to ease my pain. Following up with the professionals and taking their advice helped me become mentally and physically stronger.
I gained my motivation and determination back, consistently working with my XXX advisor and CCC counselor. I realized the biggest mistake I made at XXX was not utilizing the resources the campus had provided, however, I took advantage of various resources at CCC such as the student learning center; office hours; tutoring center; counseling and wellness coaching on campus. These resources have taught me how to manage my time efficiently; encounter stress; stay organized; build effective study habits and be a successful student. Additionally, I joined the Psychology club and the XXX honor society on campus. I realized my real interest is in Psychology and I want to help individuals who are going through diverse mental states, just like myself. I aspire to be a licensed psychologist and help make a positive difference in people’s lives. Seeking help from the professionals and utilizing the resources provided on campus, I am capable of balancing a full-time academic load, a part-time job and multiple extracurricular actives with ease.
I aspire to work in clinical settings to conduct research in health psychology, measuring the impact of behavior on health and create ways to help people make the behavior choices that induce good health and prevent illness. Therefore, I want to help patients improve their strategies for care, particularly in the area of prevention. An example would be a program that can assist people to reduce stress by studying the causes of the problem and how to prevent them. For example, studying what caused the stress in the first place and come up with solutions for the patients to overcome these problems for a full recovery. This is why I want to be part of the XXX project because this project will expand the campus by double facilitating greater capacity to focus on the University of California’s core mission of teaching, research and public service by providing new academic space for teaching and research. I want to pursue a research opportunity with the health psychology Professor XXX to conduct a research study on what stress is, why is it bad for you, and what can we do about it. Stress is something every human experience in their lives and I believe it’s important for people to understand the truth behind stress. I want to expose how we can deal with this issue to improve our health and well-being. XXX provides great resources for the psychology students, such as, ‘Stress and Coping’ research by another health psychology professor Dr. XXX. Dr. XXX research revolves around one central issue; the outcome of when people perceive stress, and if we can influence these stress processes on the biological and psychosocial level. By studying stress on both levels, I want to expose this topic and get a better understanding of health psychology by providing better insight into the human stress response.
If reinstated, I plan on keeping up with my excellent study habits by going to professor’s office hours every week; utilizing the Success Center; building better academic plans with my professors; organizing my study routine efficiently and attending tutoring sessions to get additional assistance for my classes in order to achieve excellent academic performance. I also plan to utilize the counseling department, academic advising to keep track of my classes and continuing sessions with a psychologist at the University. Studying Psychology at the XXX is a dream that I am working hard for and given a second chance, I will persist to improve my academic standing at the University.
In conclusion, I would like to give the University XXX my apologies for my lack of performance during the fall of 2016. I hope the committee will see that I took the steps to resolve my academic and health struggles during the fall semester and I will no longer be hindered by these issues in the future. Thank you for your time.
