About 10 years ago I flunked out after my 2nd semester at a private 4 year university in another state and have since moved to California. I’ve been interested in going to a California community college and transferring to a UC, preferably UC Berkeley, for Computer Science. That private 4 year university does not offer anything like Academic Renewal. I’m wondering would it be possible to do the Academic Renewal at a California community college so that those 2 semesters are not included in the GPA or unit calculation for transfer admission to UC.
You can retake any class you did not pass and the new grade you received will replace the failing grade. I went to CSU Chico State my freshman year and got a 0.34 GPA my first semester there. I went to community college the next year and retook every class I failed and got A’s so you’re fine.
Also, you’re talking 10 years ago… I doubt any UC’s will even give them any thought (But you will have to report all grades received).
Thank you for sharing your reassuring perspective and experience. One concern I have is that I dont think that there is a equivalent to just retake some of them, for example, some of the classes where about the Bible.
This happened to me too, but I went to 2 other out of state Universities while in the Army before going to a CC in California. The first University allowed me to do academic renewal for my entire record there (my GPA there was below a 1.0) but the 2nd one had no academic renewal policy, so I had to retake the equivalent classes at the CC even if it wasn’t required for my transfer major. Hopefully, your CC has all or most of the equivalent classes for you to retake. I wasn’t able to replace 2 classes from the other University and one of those grades was a D. They want you to report all grades for all Universities when you apply for transfer to the UC. I was worried that the D would drop my transfer GPA significantly but they actually did not count it. I have a 4.0 in my CC and the courses that they took from my past universities dropped my transfer GPA to 3.94. It also helped that being in the STEM field means you will end up taking many high unit courses and I believe that when they calculate your transfer GPA, they only calculate it based on 60 transferable units and I ended up with 90+ units at my CC after all the Math & Science courses. So when everything is all said and done and your ready to transfer, your GPA from all your Math/Physics/Com Sci classes at your respective CC will carry most of the weight towards your transfer GPA.
They might not even be transferable courses to a UC. Maybe you could call UC Berkeley admissions or a counselor at your community college and they’ll know which classes transfer.
I’m not completely sure about this idea but I know at my community college (American River) after a certain amount of time, classes expire especially if there has been a long gap in education like you’ve had. I would assume there is.
Whatever does happen, just start fresh at a CC. Take the Gen Ed classes and the pre reqs for your major and get A’s and I’m sure that’ll be the only thing that matters.
I second the suggestion to call a school and ask.
You can always write in your application that those classes are 10 years old, and that you have matured and learned, etc from that time.
They usually don’t count classes that old.
Also, they may not all even be UC-transferable if you’re saying the CCC doesn’t have equivalency.
I had classes from 1996 that counted for transfer. That was great for the A, but it sucked for the F.
I don’t mean it doesn’t show up in the GPA but they usually overlook it. So, your F probably didn’t really factor much into your other excellent grades.
^^^Agreed
I’m in a bit of the same situation, but they were C-'s and not F’s.
What were the classes? First find out if they’re transferable.
For me, I’m just retaking them. Maybe they’ll use the new grades, or maybe they’ll overlook the old ones because my grade trends are lightyears apart now versus then.
