Hi just to note this isn’t my letter of appeal I just want to see a few opinions if my chances are bad or good of not being academically suspended. Ok my GPA the last two semesters have been a 1.77 and a 1.55. My overall GPA was a 3.07. The fall semester my sister attempted to commit suicide she wasn’t successful. Later that semester she became pregnant. It became stressful home environment. I was taking her to doctor appointments and also working 30 hour work weeks. If they ask me why will next semester be different which I know they will… I plan on going to the health and wellness center and putting my pride down and ask for help.
Also I plan on retaking one of the courses I got a D and its a pre req course that a C is needed and I didnt get any "F"s
Chance for what? Not being kicked out? Are you a college sophomore? Junior?
Junior and academically dismissed
You need to write a letter of appeal. Meet with an academic supervisor immediately who can talk you through it.
Thank you I was completely unaware of what to Do. Its like you read my post thoroughly even though I was asking what are my chances of my appeal being successful.
Well, you need to do absolutely everything possible to try to win your appeal. You are a junior. This is a serious problem.
You need to write a letter of appeal acknowledging that your screwed up. You must lay the blame on yourself. You can explain the situation, but say that you understand that doesn’t excuse your behavior. You need to specifically address how you will retake what classes need to be retaken, that you will go to prof office hours, go to the tutoring center, put specific study times in your calendar. You will go to every class and do every assignment, and study. Your sister is moving out (or however you are going to overcome that issue) and how much you regret what has happened. You will be grateful for a second chance. Discuss what your grades were before these issues. If you know any profs and have a good relationship, ask one of them NOW if they could write a note about you as a student. If you have seen a doctor about these issues, get a doc note too.
This letter needs to be he delivered to the Dean ASAP. Good luck.
Still not what I was asking but thank you. Anyone know if my case is strong enough
I have answered your question. You have a major problem and you need to do everything possible to try and fix it. I don’t need to tell you what your odds are becasue that isn’t going to help you.
I know what I need to do reason why I didn’t ask “what do I do” I know the steps. I was hoping someone that went through the process or that sits on these chairs could give some feedback if my case is strong enough which what I’m asking…
No one can answer your question except the college. Your GPA was terrible for a year. It’s not a great situation. You know that. the sooner you consult an advisor at your college and submit an appeal, the better.
Waiting for my suspension letter should receive it in it 2 weeks. And one year of bad grades justifies removing someone who has been maintaining >3.0 GPA
It’s going to depend on the school, and how the folks on whatever committee you will be in front of treat something like this. I agree with Lindagaf - it’s almost impossible to predict. Did you get a warning after first semester? If so, did you fail to act on that warning? If so, that will not be helpful.
I will tell you that if the attitude you are displaying here comes across in your appeal letter, it’s not going to be to your benefit. People here are trying to help you and you sound like a jerk, honestly. Even your last post, “And one year of bad grades justifies removing someone who has been maintaining >3.0 GPA.” Well, yes, it very well might if the requirements of your school state that. Do yourself a favor and be less aggressive.
Well her first post was if she didnt read my post to begin with then she asked a valid question. Then it was stuff I didnt ask for and she was being condescending like I was an idiot. Thank you though basically no prediction its up in the air.
Lindagaf literally answered it right here with this sentence:
No one can answer your question except the college
I dont know what else you want. You’re the one trying to get information from College Confidential about how a Dean would think and then insulting people who try to help. If you don’t do the appeal, nobody will know your chances.
Wow, I was being condescending? No. Your initial post is vaguely worded and lacked information. Sometimes it’s not worth trying to help some people. You kept asking for chances. This is not a betting shop. Good luck to you.
I’m sorry for your situation. Post #5, where you state you were “unaware of what to do” may have confused some people.
Nobody can accurately predict chances with the letter of appeal in front of them. The posters here don’t even have that; you just provided reasons for your struggles and a couple vague of solutions. You weren’t being lazy or partying, so that’s in your favor. But a lot depends on what you put into your appeal.
I hope your letter was more specific than you’ve been here. Do you still have to drive your sister? Has your home life settled down? How are you? It must have been scary. Do you need to talk to someone? If you return to school, will you make use of advisers, counselors, and tutors? If you can put together a complete plan for moving forward, you’re probably ready to return and may be able to convince the school. However, there’s no harm in taking a break for a year and working or taking a couple of classes at a cc if that’s the route you decide to choose. Just do your best. If the appeal is rejected, ask what you need to do to get reinstated.
I wish you luck. Let us know how it works out.
Well, in the first post, OP asked, “if my chances are bad or good of not being academically suspended.” Less than ten minutes later, we learn he/she has already been “academically dismissed.” Yup, confusing.
Of course, you “could” be successful. But you provide little info for us, including whether you were already on probation after the first poor semester, expected to take action then. And, if you don’t get rolling with your plea, you get nowhere. That’s for sure.
