Academic Suspension?

I was dismissed from my uc for a year last fall. I've completed one semester, and had planned on just sitting out until January, but after calling my schools admissions office to speak to an advisor about the spring 2012 semester, I changed my mind. I explained the situation to the advisor and she asked me why I didn't plan to appeal to come back this upcoming semester. I told her I didn't think it would get approved(I was denied last time, but my reason for poor grades was different. What I thought was asthma was actually panic attacks), and she told me to try anyway. In January of this year I was diagnosed with Bipolar I rapid cycling, and I have been recieving treatment since then. I've also had other great personal changes occur. My medicines have mellowed me out and my thoughts don't race anymore, nor do I deal with depression. My major questions are:1-do I have a chance of having it approved, and 2- what should I discuss in the appeals letter. I'd appreciate a litte advice. :)

anyone? Out of 45 view I know someone can help!

It wouldn’t hurt to try, if you were diagnosed with a disorder and have been taking medication for it then you should have a better chance at getting approved…as for what to talk about I am not sure.

So you’ve only appealed once, and your adviser told you to try again before you were even diagnosed with a bipolar disorder? If your adviser thought you had a shot before, you probably have a much better shot now that you’ve been diagnosed and been through treatment.

If I understood correctly, it sounds like your adviser is on your side and should be able to tell you what to include in your letter. Just guessing since I’ve never written a letter like this before, but possibly talk about the physical and mental difficulties you experienced when you were enrolled, discuss your search for a diagnosis (showing you were trying to get help), and how your capacity for schoolwork has changed and improved now that you’re being treated. You may want to see if your doctor can write you a letter confirming your treatment.

Definitely, definitely try appealing again. Good luck!

Thank you guys so much for your replies. Anybody else have words of advise on writing it?

I spoke to disability services, and I’m going to meet with them on Thursday. They’ve agreed to enroll me in there services and write a letter on my behalf to attach to the appeal. What are my chances of an appeal now?
