i am a unc graduate student, and i got depression since jan with psychiatrist prove, (bullied by my classmate/roommate during final exam) and had bad grades, i explained to school, got on probation, they told me i cant get any bad grades this year, but i took 7 classes last module, and got bad grades again, they want me to dismiss
is there anything i can do? i spoke to my associate dean, he literally said: i dont care if you are depressed, if you get depressed still take exams and get bad grades, you have to go
I see that you are a graduate student. There is less leeway i would imagine. Are they funding you?
What did you do differently the second semester?
Is 7 classes the normal amount of credits?
-
get your depression under control.
-
Ask your dean what you could do to show you are capable of returning.
Seven classes during one term seems excessive for an MBA student.
i was over confident, because during core class i had 6 classes, also passed all
@booper we can choose 3-7 each mod, i chose 7 because mod3 i didnt fail any class so i felt i can do it. but i was very depressed that time and i asked TA if i should drop one class, he said i cant, so i had to carry on
@Publisher i was over confident, because during core class i had 6 classes, also passed all
If faced with no other option, there are a significant number of accredited online MBA programs available for you to consider.
An MBA without work experience is not as valuable as an MBA with work experience. You should, therefore, consider a part time MBA program whether online or in class.
@Publisher the school said cant let me do part time
Yes, I understand that your current school wants you out. But there are many other schools which offer part time programs. Both online & traditional classroom options are abundant.
They told you you couldn’t get any more bad grades, so you took seven classes, when you had already had problems, and you got bad grades. This might sound harsh, but that doesn’t show great judgement. What you can do is see a therapist or counselor to help yourself understand why you are depressed and engaging in such self-sabotaging behavior. Take care of your mental health, then figure out how to complete your degree.
@Lindagaf on mod3 i also took 6 classes, that time, my depression was ok, so i passed all classes, so i thought i could do that, thats why mod4 i took 7 classes till i failed
now school doesnt allow me to go back
What does passed mean to you in this context?
For grad school, A is expected, B is like a C and C is like an F.
@bopper we only have high pass, pass, low pass and F, i got a few L
I think they expect more of grad students. Not failing is not the goal you set in grad school.
@bopper yes, they said less than 20% Low, i was depressed and didnt report
First I would get medically evaluated and possibly treated for depression. You can’t really do anything until you do that.
Probably you should have done that last semester.
@bopper i actually did last semester but i didnt report to school, now i am telling them, they dont buy in, even with evidence
I assume that you are a UNC-CH student.
Have you been to CAPS? CAPS should be able tell you what if any options you have for a medical withdrwal. I have no idea what the rules are for graduate students. In some cases, undergaraduates can take a retroactive medical withdraw and the grades would be erased.
