Academics at The U

Hey,
I am a high school junior from Minnesota trying to decide what school is right for me. I visited the U a couple of weeks ago and really liked it. The only thing that bothers me is that I am looking to attend a fairly prestigious academic school. I hear that the U has good academics but it is often ranked very low, lower than many other big ten schools. I was wondering if current or former students could describe their academic experience at the U, like the difficulty of classes and amount of work. I would like to hear specifically about CBS, but anything would be fine.

Thanks in advance

the U is trying to change their rankings... at least that is the only reason I can see for their dramatically rising standards for admission and giant amounts of money pumped into recruiting high-scoring students. I've heard that they are trying to become more selective than Ann Arbor, so the academics will probably get better as the U attracts more of the kids that get accepted at the Ivys, but stay in MN because of the giant scholarships offered by the U.

Yes,UM has started to attract more outstanding students.
The decrease of OOS tuition is a good example.
I am looking forward to the ranking's rising.

CBS was recently ranked as the 3rd best college in the nation for research and its Fall 2007 student profile shows the effect of this. CBS is now the most competitive college at the U for admission (Average top 4% of class, 29 act). CBS, Carlson, and IT are all excellent programs at the U. In terms of course load, the general classes are pretty painless but if you are in IT or CBS, you're gonna have your work cut out for you (especially if your in the honors program). If your looking for a rigourous academic program, look no further than CBS honors or IT honors. The academic workload is intense.
