An attempt by the Naval Academy to honor the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. this week by serving fried chicken, greens and cornbread in the midshipmen's dining hall sparked a debate on the Annapolis campus about racial sensitivity.

On Tuesday, the academy served those items along with mashed potatoes, pie and lemonade as clips of King speeches were broadcast in King Hall, named after an academy graduate. The meal was served Tuesday because classes were not held during the holiday honoring the civil rights leader....

Jeez, another BS reporter following in the footsteps of Bradley Olsen, quoting those anonymous internet forum sources. If one is looking to find fault, there is usually a way. And if one is looking for a story, there is also usually a way to find one, no matter how low they have to go to dig up 'sources'.

For pete's sake...people are complaining when they don't feed the mids, now they're complaining because they do. Make up your minds!

Probably, since unhealthy fried chicken was served, the health nuts will be at it and because turnip greens were served, the 'cod' people will also be after it. So, bottom line, it shouldn't take too long for it to turn into a "don't feed" complaint.

Well, honestly, after searching for Dr. King's favorite foods, I found that his favorites were "Southern foods." What is more southern than fried chicken with turnip greens and cornbread? If I asked my Alabama mother in law for traditional southern food, that is exactly the menu she'd plan. Dr. King's favorite pie was pecan. Did they serve that?

mom3boys, did you read the article? It had absolutely nothing to do with being fed!

From what I have heard it all had to do with what was said by an officer to a table of MIDN.

jadler, I know that. My post was tongue-in-cheek. I am a bit of a smart a@@, which I think is way better than my being the opposite.

Reminds me of when Tiger Woods won the Masers for the first time. This meal was stereotypical, just like when Fuzzy Zeller indicated that the Masters dinner would serve fried chicken and greens....

What does the grill sargent say? Are collard greens served on a regular basis in the fleet/King Hall? I liked the slide show idea. I heard that some people were offended.

Hahah that meal was stereotypical. We all got down to King Hall and we're kind of surprised that they were serious about that meal. I've never had collards at King Hall and haven't seen fried chicken on the menu for a while.
What would that reporter say if they found out that most companies nominated the black people in their company for Blue and gold that night? Most of our upperclass did the same thing around mlk day. pretty humorous if you ask me.
I didn't hear about anyone being offended about the slide show, it was just pictures of MLK, pretty interesting, nothing new, nothing controversial.

Thanks JT. A little sense injected.

jadler03 - at CVW some mids told me it was not just any officer... but the 'dant.

Yes and I chose my wording for a reason.

hahaha thats great. Yes, that is very stereotypical and offensive to me. Serving fried chicken, lemonade, and collard greens on MLK Day?? You have got to be kidding me!
