I have had a recent personal situation and was wondering if anyone has any experience on what the academy will cover.
I got into a bike accident two days ago and ended up flying off my bike and doing a face plant going about 15 miles per hour. To make a long story short I ended up with a broken nose to broken front teeth and one other front tooth that I am most likely going to lose very soon.
I don’t have all that great of health/ dental insurance. I am getting my nose reset and everything but as far as the teeth go I don’t think I will be able to afford it. I was wondering if the academy would pay for or even assist in paying for an implant tooth as well as caps for the others since it didn’t happen at the academy and since it isn’t a necessity.
Anything anyone knows on this topic would be much appreciated!
Thank you!

Wow... that really sucks. As far as the Academy covering it... I'd doubt it. I don't know though, so don't count it out. As far as a dental implant goes, my sister had one put in on friday... OUCH. Good luck, I hope the Academy does cover it, but I wouldn't count on it...

You really should discuss this immediately with the academy since it represents a change in your condition since you took the DODMERB exam. If you need a medical turnback, you don't want it to happen on I-day. If your dentist thinks you could have the work done and be healed up by I-day, that would definitely be in your favor. It would be worth it in those circumstances to borrow the money and have the work done. I don't want to discourage you, but I suspect that the academy does not want to in-process any cadets with missing front teeth. Wishing you the best!

Thanks for the advice RTBdad. I have been in to several dentists/doctors and it seems that it isn't yet certain what the status of my teeth are. I am healing rather quickly and it now looks as if I will be able to keep my tooth after all since it is hardening in it's new position. All I will need for it is a root canal. Other than that unless the academy has a problem with two chipped teeth I think I am good to go. I will eventually get them capped at the academy. Which brings me to ask another question. I know that it isn't the academy's responsibility to fix my problem but I was wondering if there are any no interest military loans that we can get....

Sounds like good news! As for the loans, I can tell how you got into the academy - you sure aren't shy! Cadets are offered a very low interest loan (currently $30,000) after they have finished the first two years. That's worth it even if you just put it all into a savings account (which you should!). But please keep in mind that until Acceptance Day you're barely in the military. After that, more opportunities may open up to you. Even then I doubt that you'll be offered any loans at rates better than the rest of us. Supposedly the Air Force is providing everything you need. They don't really have any inclination to have you any more in their debt than you'll be on I-day, nor will you really have any resources to pay off a loan until your third year.

It isn't like I am going to be having any health issues over chipped teeth since they are sealed. I'll just look like a hill-billy for a while. lol. I guess that's not a big deal with the great future the academy has ahead of us. Thank you for your help.
