For all of you who have appointments, you either have received or will be receiving a letter concerning dental. I just got mine today and had a question about getting my wisdom teeth out. They say in the letter it’s very important to get them out before you get to the academy so you don’t interrupt your academics or delay the process of getting your pilot qualification. I was just wondering if it is that important to get them out. For me, my wisdom teeth are coming in but aren’t a problem. I’m going to the dentist next week so we’ll see what he says. If any cadets could give some insight to this topic it’d be greatly appreciated.

There's a thread somewhere beating this subject to death.

IMO, if you can, get them out before you get to the Academy by your personal dentist. You will not have the time or desire to be out of commission during the coming years.

Our cadet didn't even have anything to "pull" this time last year, and this past fall began complaining of headaches...sure enough her wisdom teeth were erupting. She just took a lot of Tylenol and was "teething" during winter finals.

As she said, "They're ALL coming out this summer, I don't want to go through the others coming in..."

Get your dentist's opinion and possibly the ortho surgeon's as well. If you need them at, get them out. Trust me, you DO NOT want to go through having them come in at the Academy. It's not bad at all getting them out. You get an IV, then wake up a little messed up, take some Vicodin, get more messed up, lose a bunch of weight, and a few days later you'll be fine (unless you're one of the unlucky ones).

This was brought up last year....http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/archive/index.php/t-69264.html

Docfrance was not keen on it.

I just got mine out about 2 months ago. I didn't think it was bad at all. The Academy will take them out if you come here with them (and if you're going to fly you will have to get them out, even if they're coming in okay). Getting them out ahead of time alleviates having to wait "your turn" (since so many people have to get theirs out), but I personally don't think it's a big deal. If they ay you MUST get them out before you come, then do that, but otherwise I wouldn't really bother. If you do get them out ahead of time, do it very soon. You don't want to show up here before being completely healed or you will surely acquire complications.

I just had my dentist appointment today. Man my mouth confuses them! I only have my top two wisdom teeth. But they aren't doing anything. My dentist said I should NOT have them pulled now because one is really close to my sinuses and if a bone fragment comes out then there might be a hole into the sinus. That would be bad. On top of that, I still have three baby teeth. Two top canines. The permanent teeth aren't doing anything, in fact, they are kinda diagonally sitting there and probably won't come in at all. Then, my right bottom canine has the permanent tooth fully through on the back side, but teh baby tooth is firmly above it, not loose AT ALL. He said don't do anything, if it becomes loose, no problem. But nothing needs pulling, and could be worse if I do.

How's that for fun!
