Acceptance Chance?

My test is in a week and these are the results from my practice test:

Verbal: 800
Reading: 722
Math: 698

I'm in eighth grade and applying to Phillips Andover and maybe Milton Academy. Obviously I have to work harder on the math portion, but would I be able to get in? I know Phillips' average SSAT Percentile is around 93%, but I'm not really sure what percentiles those are in, except for the Verbal part. I had my interview a week ago and I think I did really well on that, and I'm in Digital Photography, Yearbook, and Student Council at my school. And for community service I'm head of the community service committee at my school. I'm currently at Kemps Landing, which is a magnet school so I have 5 high school credits. I also do tennis and flute.

Thanks =)

those are very good scores on the ssat, although like you said, you could always do better at math. i would be careful with practice tests though, i've done two workbooks based on the ssat and the tests varied in difficulty. also, have you considered applying to other schools?

I agree with hotchkissjin. You should defintiley apply to more schools. When applying to some schools you could be the perfect applicant and not get accepted. some schools that you might like include Middlesex School, Concord Academy, Phillips Exeter, Hotchkiss, and Brooks School.

Thanks =) I was planning on applying to Concord and Exeter, but I'm not so sure; what's the application amount?

they're pretty much the same amount. the task of filling out an application is very daunting but if you get accepted, it's all worth it

hmm i do worse on practice tests than the real test... 1900 vs 2200...
your going to do great

definetley. ha all i was thinking at my SSAT test last year was 'by doing well on this it could change my life completley'....and if i failed it could ruin my life...........just a little stress on my shoulders.... i stress myself out easily haha :)

I did another test today and I did horrrrribly :s

I had the same score for Reading but my Verbal went down to 750s and Math was only 740ish. Bleh. I wish I could apply to a lot of schools but my parents don't want me to go anywhere at all and I'd feel bad if I applied to a ton and didn't get in. :( Thankfully, though, I don't really get stressed out much... It's weird. I'm not a very nervous-y type; I'll probably just get really hyper that morning, lol.

Does anyone have any other tips for a good test and stuff?

:)

@ xoogabyxoo

lol, how do you prep for your test? like i seriously need advice, i dont spend time at all preparing.

@ineedtotryharder

although the question wasn't directed at me, i bought workbooks. they're really helpful, they helped increase my score from my original diagnostic :)

I bought the Kaplan SSAT book, and there was this website online that had a ton of questions from the previous tests... I just printed that out and kept doing them. And now I'm going to read Wordly Wise, which has a ton of the vocab words...

Took the test today; I think I did well... I hope. xD Everyone else was aiming for maximum 70th percentile except me. Bleh.

Oh my GOD.

Got my SSAT scores today/

Verbal: 99 percentile
Math: 77 percentile
Reading: 93 percentile
Total: 95 percentile

And my estimated national percentile is

Verbal: 98 percentile
Math: 97 percentil
Reading: 97 percentile.

But I honestly have no idea what THAT means. :S

Jesus Christ. I can't believe my math score, I mean I know did terrible on the practice, but... I was aiming for Phillips Andover. It was either there or Milton, and... Urgh. I didn't even know this was so important to me. Is there any microscopic chance I can get in? And if not, what top boarding schools CAN I get into? Or did I just blow my chances with that math portion?

I mean, I'm definetly not as qualified as the other applicants on this website. But I guess I'll write another list? >.<

I go to Kemps Landing Magnet School
Have currently 5 high school credits
And no, I did not get straight A's, I had two B's. :( My school's grading system is 94 and above A, which is different than my old one. Bleh.

Digital Photography Staff member
Flute Band
Flute Bay Youth Orchestra
Flute Private Lessons
Student Council Association Secretary
Head of the Community Service Committee

And the only extremley speshul award I've gotten is the Johns Hopkins CTY Thing... I got in the top 90 percentile for ELAand Math, and was Second Place for
ELA.
And unfortunately, I've never gotten a chance to do something beyond the world like other applicants... =(

Thanks sooo much everyone =) I suppose I might still make it to some other schools? Probably not Andover or Exeter, but are there any really good boarding schools I might get into? Because I need financial aid, also. Thanks again <3

OOOOOH MY GOODNESS.
Take a deep breath. Please.
77% on your math is NOT insanely bad. You did better than over 3/4 of the other test takers!!! I mean, imagine being the student who got 1%... Meaning they did the WORST.

You did great! Andover's cutoff (typically) is 93% overall, and you got well within that. Please calm down. Confidence is attractive, and schools like that. you seem to have a lot of varied but specialized ECs, and that's also a plus. Please don't freak out and start saying Andover and Exeter are not even possible! Wait til you interview, write great essays, and focus on your good points- like your flute, or the student council, or whatnot.

You're right. 77% on math isn't insanely bad, but seriously, have you seen some of the other resumes on CC? I mean, have you seen YOUR'S? Lol, I know that Andover's cutoff is a 93% average, but 95 seems so.... Close. To me, at least.

I did do my interview for Andover actually very well, since I'm more of a people person. It's just that, well, I was hoping to aim for at least a 97 average. And the fact that I got a 77 percent just scared me, because typically, around school, people think I'm insanely blonde, even when I'm Korean (...? I know. Weird.) And then there's the fact that my dad's a graduate school professor and is a math genius, while I got 14 wrong on my math portion just hugely terrifies me.

Sorry if I came off as extremley panicky, because I did xD. Today's just really not been a good day for me, what with getting a SEVENTY D in Science because of some screw up our teacher made in not telling us that we apparently need three different introductions for our science project, and basically getting the worst grades in my life. Lol, anyways, thanks Saer =)

XOOGABYOO: Andover does NOT have a cutoff score. The average SSAT percentile is 93%. PLEASE DO NOT WORRY about your math score. Your scores give you just as good a chance for Andover, as any other student.

Relax, and do a good job on your essays!

But, if you really want to go to a boarding school, make sure that your list of schools is not filled with ones that only accept 20% of the applicants. Unfortunately, many qualified applicants are rejected.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone =]

The main thing is, my parents- especially my dad does NOT want me to go to boarding school. I'm applying to Andover because they know how much I want it, but when I asked if I could send my SSAT scores to other schools, he got really upset, so I'm not sure if I can apply to even three schools.

Hopefully I'll do well on my essays =] Since writing is one of my strong points

One question, though- do minorities count at all? I mean, in a tone of the chance me resumes, people are always stating their nationality. I'm Korean, but I was born in France and lived in the US for most of my life- will that affect anything?

Also, I wasn't really concerned about this until... Now, xD But I was wondering. I did my interview for Phillips Andover and I am an EXTREME extrovert, very social, and extremley emotional. I recently read on CC that for interviews you should be calm and composed- and I laughed a lot, and was generally my whole happy self during the whole thing. Do you think the interviewer would've been annoyed with that? The person after me was very solemn, he had his hands together and was very serious about the whole thing- not that I wasn't serious, except I was, er... I don't know how to word it, but yeah.

ok… i know im late But… YOUR SSAT SCORES BARELY MATTER. I hate to break it to you but if you get between an 80 and 95 then that just lets them know you are smart enough to get decent grades there. After that they look for what will contribute to their community so they will be focusing mainly on your interview, essays, and EC’s. Just sayin…

hey xoogabyxoo I just wanted to say that my school uses the same grading scale as your school although it is not a magnet school. Do you know if the schools (admission officers) know that or not? because we could get a disadvantage because we could get a 93% which is a B+ but an A in other schools.
