Acceptance from UCSD

Hey guys,

I've been accepted as a transfer student into Sixth College. Being an international student I couldn't go to Transfer Admit Day, etc. I have yet to wait for my other college's replies, but since UCSD is the cheapest, I am seriously considering it.

I've done a lot of research about what it's like on UCSD and there are SO many opinions here and on the Internet. So I was wondering if anyone that goes there, or was able to go to Admit day, could tell me what it is like there in person.

What are the best and worst parts of UCSD? Is the campus pretty? Is it true that there is little school spirit? Is it difficult to fit in because I'm a transfer student?

Also, in terms of academics: How large are classes, GE and upper-division?

Thanks!

I didn’t go to transfer admit day, but I live in San Diego, have taken a couple classes there cross-enrolled from my CC and have spent plenty of time on campus The campus is nice. I wouldn’t say the buildings are gorgeous or anything; they’re fairly boring concrete for the most part. However, you’re in La Jolla, which is a very nice part of San Diego, you’re literally on the cliffs overlooking the ocean (you can walk to the beach in ~10 minutes.)

It won’t be difficult to fit in as a transfer student, nobody cares how you got there. I made a number of friends in the couple classes I took and I technically wasn’t even a student there.

As for the school spirit, yeah, it’s not great. Fairly mediocre, actually. There’s no football team (which in the U.S. is a huge driving factor of school spirit) and not a huge emphasis on sports in general. It’s a great academic school, but not really known as a bastion of school spirit.

I’ll be attending in the fall (moving in the summer to take summer courses.) If you can, I would highly recommend The Village apartments on campus. They’re brand new and nice, plus living on campus will get you more of the “college experience” you seem to be after.
