digmedia: I'm curious what program at OU attracted your son, and why. (sorry if I missed it in reading). Thanks!

dig
glad to hear would about the acceptances - we're still waiting on the earlies. Fingers crossed for honors!

kjofkw - he wants to do film production. The department that initially attracted him was telecommunications - the video production track. Then he found out that the Honors Tutorial College had a film production program (usually only a graduate level program), so that's what he's trying for. I will say we were all impressed with the TCOM dept also.

Digmedia, keeping fingers crossed for you and son.

Good luck to your son and you.

Digi- congrats to your son and keeping fingers crossed for more good news!

Having gone through this four years ago with our S who's a sr. in design|media at UCLA, I can understand your anxiety. (Our D is a HS sr. this year, so we're going through it again.) Doing a portfolio, or anything else in addition to the regular app, adds to the level of difficulty. Then, I was able to log onto UCLA's website to get the electronic acceptance, but the server crashed because it couldn't handle the number of log-ins (40,000 applied that year). So, S wanted to wait until the paper acceptance arrived in cast it was a computer glitch. Talk about extending the agony!

When the housing deposit is paid, some anxiety is alleviated until orientation and course registration. Being Boston-based, making arrangements for a support system of friends and relatives in LA took some time to make sure S would be in good hands just in case. To be honest, with all the technology of instant messaging, e-mail, and cell phones, distance isn't that much of a problem.

And as for partying, I'm relieved that after attending a few parties and seeing what bingeing can do to others, S applies the "everything in moderation, nothing in excess" adage. He also was a community service officer for a while.

Sounds as if your S and you will be fine. Good luck!

Whew, everything for the OU honors app is now done: in addition to the regular app, three letters of recommendation, a portfolio, an essay on "why study this...," a writing sample, and a resume. The portfolio was hardest: he did a DVD with his films (three animations, two documentaries, portions of the football team's "highlights reel" - with opening animation and graphics - that he produces every year, and a fictional film). His portfolio is an "interview" in which he introduces highlights of each film and then menu items to the full versions of the films. For the writing sample, he's submitting a short story he did for his creative writing class.

The story is quite long - over 20 pages single-spaced. They won't have time to read that - will they just skim it, start it, or be angry that he submitted something so long? Any ideas? I'd hate for him at this late date to start something new just to have something shorter.

Now the USC app is being worked on. I don't see how he's going to get it finished by the deadline (12/10), but he somehow always comes through.

Question #2 (esp. for TsDad): should he submit the portfolio with the CTV app? They only ask for a "portfolio list," but would the portfolio in addition help or hurt?
