Thanks for the insight. =D

Well, that kind of makes me feel a little better about my Columbia likely letter.

lol my question was asking how you guys manage to find this type of “insider” information, not exactly what you know

^There are articles in our school newspaper written about admissions every once in a while.

Also, THE standard of college admissions books is called “A is for Admissions” by Dartmouth’s own Michelle Hernandez. In that book, she tells a lot of ‘insider information’ about different schools, as well as a ton about Dartmouth. There is also another great book by another former Dartmouth admissions officer called “Fat Envelope Frenzy” by Joie Jager-Hyman.

after hearing about dartmouth, i’m kinda worried b/c i thought i’d get in there… but i got a likely from columbia

fyi, i think i’m considered international cuz i’m living abroad, although i’m american

You don’t need to get a likely to get into Dartmouth. Overall, only 2-3% of all applicants to the college end up getting one. The acceptance rate will be 10 or 11% this year. You still have a very good shot.

You saying that “only 2-3% of all applicants to the college end up getting one” sounds a lot better than your older post saying “Dartmouth gives likely letters to about 1/4 of the students accepted regular decision”.

Not getting a likely from Columbia is discomforting (not that i really expect one anyway) mostly because it means that my chances at other schools are not as good either :/

^ I realized later that I should put this in perspective for people. 1/4 of all those accepted regular decision seems like its a huge amount, but we’re really talking about a semi-select group among a super-select group. Again, don’t worry if you didn’t get one. We had ED rejects last year get into HYP regular decision. You can still get rejected from Dart and get in anywhere. You can still get rejected from Columbia and get in anywhere. You can get a likely from Dartmouth and get in nowhere else, including Cornell (one non-legacy, non-athlete, non-minority guy from my HS). I don’t know anybody personally, but it is certainly possible that it could happen at Columbia too.

Good luck guys. Only 2-3 weeks away.

@blueducky: I don’t think the Columbia likely is an indicator of your chances at other schools so much as it is Columbia easing the minds of applicants it knows it eventually will accept. Different schools look for different things, and while one school may think one applicant is impressive enough to designate as “likely,” another school will reject that same applicant. I got a likely from CC in January and I just got rejected from MIT on Saturday so that should tell you something.

Columbia College and MIT obviously look for different things. As one is more science and mathematics based (MIT) versus liberal arts at CC

I mean, I am very math and sciencey and I did apply to CC as a physics major. I guess the courses I’ve been largely forced to take throughout high school make me seem more humanities-focused. which sucks for me.

hey everyone,

we’re putting together a list of Lit Hum resources [in this thread](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/columbia-2013/651389-lit-hum-books.html). come help out!

haha cman74, I know but it’ll still help ease the anxiety. Sort of. I get to find out about 6 colleges on the 31st… this is really insane.

My friend got a CC likely and was just accepted at MIT. I’m so happy for her lol.

Congrats man!

i just got accepted!!!

and i never sent them in
but YAYAYAYAY!!! here’s what it sayz:

I am writing to inform you that your application to Columbia University has been carefully evaluated and that you have earned designation as a likely candidate for admission to Columbia College. As long as our midyear review finds that you are maintaining your current level of academic progress and good standing, you can expect to receive favorable word when admissions packets are mailed on March 31st.

The Committee on Admissions was deeply impressed with your scholastic and personal achievements, and we look forward to all you might add to our rich campus community. I offer you my sincere congratulations on your accomplishments thus far and eagerly anticipate those that lie ahead.

If we can be of any help to you, please do not hesitate to contact the Admissions Office at ugrad-ask@columbia.edu or 212-854-2522. Please save the dates for Columbia College Days on Campus on April 19th and 20th or April 22nd and 23rd, which will include a hosted overnight visit, a chance to sit in on classes, tours of New York City and much more.
