Acceptance Letters? Already?

Haha I know nothing about a midyear report. Another school I applied to had one specifically for their school-does Columbia have one of them? I don’t remember seeing one so I didn’t send anything. Where do I find it? Or if they don’t have one what did you send? Just an updated transcript? Oh and I bet they would take your situation into account, I wouldn’t worry too much if it was all explained.

fyi - lolcats…stanford isn’t bound by the ivy policy, whereas you can’t be “admitted” to columbia yet so they can’t shower you with praise. i am sure stanford has their own policy, though not sure what they say.

i got a likely, too! gyah :)!!

Have any deferrees received likely letters, or it has only been RD applicants?

I didn’t get anything… I am worried…

^ me too. it seems everyone got a likely except me, and you… :[
my hopes for Columbia go down a little each day…

Congrats to you guys that got one tho! must be such a stress-reliever :]

Not sure why or how, but I got a likely letter yesterday. Humorously enough, I was sent it only a day after I had faxed my update letter…

So, wait, how many students received these?

I got a likely, too! Does anyone know how these work? (In more detail then the usual ‘you’re going to be admitted…’)

Does Columbia give out a lot of Likelies?

i second soap’s question
this is making me nervous
i’m hoping it was all just RD

I received my likely letter an hour after I faxed my update letter. I don’t believe the two were connected.

Dude, likelies only go to TOP TOP applicants. It only looks like everyone’s getting them because this site is usually the top of the applicant range. The vast majority of admitted students don’t get likelies first.

^That’s pretty cool. Although I do hear that Dartmouth gives 1/3 of its students likelies

^How do you hear about things like that?

i dunno where, but i heard something similar for Dartmouth likelies. something like 1/4 or 1/3 of its students get likelies. they’re very aggressive in recruiting its students.

well i really hope not all the admitted ppl get likely letters
I still haven’t got one yet, and all these likely letters are making me a bit nervous
i had pretty high stats too, idk i wish they wud just let every1 know at the same time
or i wish they wud just give me a likely letter :P

don’t worry about it. as ppl have already said, college confidential represents an abnormally strong sample of applicants. it may seem like lots of ppl are getting likelies, but it’s actually quite rare. so try not to let it get to your head.

Dartmouth seems to be very generous in giving out likelies, Columbia less so.
Um… if you got a likely letter, could it affect admissions decisions at other schools? (No, right? Schools don’t communicate like that… or do they? I keep hearing mixed things about this!) Anyway, congrats to all :)

I have at least 3 friends who have not received likelies… so it’s not that common. I’m the only one at my school who got a likely, though some of our top applicants did not apply to Columbia.

To clarify, Dartmouth gives likely letters to about 1/4 of the students accepted regular decision. As the admissions officers are reading through the applications for the first time, they send out likelies to those that they are confident will be accepted without needing to be compared to the other applicants. It is possible, but really rare that an applicant ends up not getting in.

The reason they send them out is because of an ivy-league agreement prevents them from mailing final acceptance letters until March 31st. The letters are meant to ease the minds of the applicants who find themselves in an unnecessarily stressful time of their life.

To answer your questions: No, other schools do not find out that you have a likely letter. Also, no other IVY seems to use the letters as extensively at Dartmouth. At most other schools, they only go to athletes, and super-applicants.
