I just received my waitlist letter..and I'm pretty disappointed because I thought I was a pretty strong candidate. One thing that stood out on my letter is this sentence: "This year Georgetown considered over 19,500 candidates for an entering class of 1,580 first-year students." This is an 8% acceptance rate, which is nowhere near its normal 16-18%. I have read past posts on their site and it says that on this page:

http://www.georgetown.edu/news/undergraduate-applications-class-of-2017.html

"The university admitted 3,293 students for an admission rate of 16.6 percent, a similar selectivity rate as last year."

Can anyone explain this? Are the other 1700 other admits from Early action? I am confused and a bit angry at this.

Not everyone accepted enrolls. In all likelihood, they will probably accept about 3300 students and then maybe 1500 will enroll (meaning they choose to attend) and 80 will come off the waitlist (very rough numbers, but just to give you some sense of what happened)

I’m pretty sure the office has said in interviews with the school paper that they expect a similar rate to last year (around 17%).

What NUadmit123 said. Georgetown’s yield rate (the percentage of admitted students who choose to matriculate) has traditionally hovered around 50%.
