Acceptance rates...

In the Tufts catalogue, (just visited last week! Was wonderful! ^^) Tufts claims to have an acceptance rate of 27% for the class of 2008. But if you read the small spiel by the dean of undergraduate admissions, he says that...

"At Tufts - where 14,729 students sought one of the 1,285 seats in the Class of 2008 - the statistics revealed that the clear majority can..."

If you do the math, the acceptance rate is actually ~8.7%, which is lower then even Harvard... crazy?

No that's different. They accept 3x as many students than they need, and statistically guestimate who will matriculate (which over the past couple years has hovered around 25-30%?).

Ah, I think I see... so the acceptance rate IS actually 27%, roughly 1/4 of all applications, and the 1,285 figure is the actual # of students that attend?
