Thank you so much. Best of luck to those still waiting to hear back from Thornton and to everyone else!!
Also, Cal Arts is a 35 minute drive to LA, so I am unsure why that wouldn’t be considered to have proximity to LA. It’s not much further out than Oxy- a car or uber/lyft would be necessary in either case to get around.
@MountHood, This is something we’re encouraging our son to do when he’s making his decisions. At most of his schools, you can download or see the four year degree plan or “map”. At some schools, you can drill down from there to specific courses and who teaches them.
For Jazz Studies, which is defined a lot like a performance degree from what I gather, the difference is in the electives and core requirements for the overall university. Since Music Production is defined differently at each school, he could find out that a program is more or less of what he wants to do on a day by day, and year by year, basis.
Agreed!
Thanks for your input! I should have added that I am a prof. at a small liberal arts college and made him look extensively at course catalogues and departmental websites. I just don’t know much about music, and even less about music technology, and since my son is mostly self-taught in that area, I am not so sure that he truly knows what all these different classes in the field will entail …
CalArts is definitely close enough to L.A., and it was initially his dream school, but somehow he has come to the conclusion that he wants a more traditional liberal arts education (yeah! mom agrees!) as well as a focus on music technology. Therefore LMU, Cal Lutheran, and Occidental. So here’s my take on these three schools so far:
-
LMU: Has a fantastic film school and he would come out with marketable skills in sound production for film and other media. Less music within the Recording Arts major, though, perhaps too little for my son. (But there is a a new tenure-track professor building a music technology focus in the music department.)
-
Occidental: Music production concentration within a traditional Music B.A. program, i.e. a hefty dose of music theory and music history–perhaps too much for my son’s taste. Great liberal college with many artsy students.
-
Cal Lutheran: Music production major with exactly the focus he is looking for. The tenured music professor who has been building the program over the last 10 years focuses on composition/film scoring. A very successful audio engineer (won 17 Grammys) teaches there now full-time. Fewer requirements in music theory and history (although advanced courses in these are available, if desired), which would make it possible to minor or double-major in fields such as computer science or economics/business.
In each of these schools the music production/technology program is small, so I would appreciate any insights into these programs anyone may have!
Ah then, I gave you some advice you already knew. If you go to the Class of 23 thread, there is a parent whose daughter is going into audio technology. I’ll see if I can find their name and let you know.
ETA I can’t message you. Their name is dfbdfb.

We are waiting for this information too. Hope they send it out soon!
Congratulations to all who got into Thornton! My son auditioned but didn’t get accepted tonight. BUT he did get into Viterbi School of Engineering! What a rollercoaster good luck to all who are limping across the finish line!

Good evening,
My daughter was waitlisted at Frost. Do you have any idea how many freshman they take for of classical voice? I’m sure it’s a long shot , but just out of curiosity.
Hi there. I’m so sorry about the waitlist. I don’t know how many they take, and being a jazz parent I don’t know anything about voice. I can tell you, though, that there are some students who get accepted and do turn down their spots. As with any waitlist, for the sake of yours and her mental health, I’d count it as a no. Then, if it happens it’s a great surprise, but you’ve gone ahead and made plans for another school, too.
Thank you for your reply. She’s def moving forward. If it happens, will be a nice surprise.
My son is on the waitlist at UNT and I feel the same. It will be interesting what happens over the next month, and I think the waitlists will move.
I don’t know the stats for classical voice at Frost but do know this is a tippy-top program and classical vocalists often seem to have longer odds in general. Sorry about the news (although congrats on the wait list status!) and welcome to our anxious news-sharing crowd!
