This is tough, and I’d love to hear any answers from those who’ve done this before. It’s so much easier to find information about a whole university or college, but when it comes down to the music school I sometimes struggle to just find out how many kids are in it, let alone what they do after graduation.
US Dept of Education has a College Scorecard site, where you can go to a particular school, scroll down to choose majors, drill down to music, and there will be information about average salaries and average debt.
ETA: Be ready for some low salary numbers at any school.
I can find “performing arts” typically on common data sets but that is a wide range at some schools. Will have to email schools directly. But being down to 3 or 4 helps.
Ok. Making a list of questions for my son to send to the “final 4.” Anything you can think of to add?
-
How many students are in Vocal Performance?
-
Approximately how many hours a week are VP students in class or lessons?
-
What are the ensemble or performance requirements?
-
Can VP students do shows (operas or musical theater?)
-
Are there any study abroad opportunities specific for music majors?
-
Are there any travel ensemble opportunities?
-
What do graduates of this program typically do?
-
What is the typical course progression/curriculum? (Is there a 4 yr printout?)
-
Can students double major or include a minor with this program? If so, are there typical choices that work well?
I love your chart! I’d have a hard time not wanting to be a Ragin Cajun!
Do you have studio assignments for all your options and is he doing sample lessons at all 4 with the right teacher? I may be projecting.
That’s a great list of questions, we might use those.
Not sure about studio but he has met inperson with voice teachers at 2 out of the 3. He is setting up a zoom voice lesson with the 4th.
As far as questions, how do I word it? Can I ask “who would my primary voice teachers be?”
Yes! It’s down to Ragin Caguns, Yellow Jackets, Dolphins, and Orange.
I just posted this on finding how many students graduate in each major:
The site proved helpful in thinking of the size of the music major population (at least quadruple for # of music majors).
Something like “How does the vocal department do studio assignments?” Maybe?!
Thank you!
I would choose BW just for the Bee swag!!
I LOVE yellow but hate brown!
I’ve had lots of fun wondering if my kid would be a Lynx, a 'Cane, part of the Wolf Pack or what. Early on, UC Santa Cruz was on his list, and we were pleased he might become a Slug. In addition to these, he’s been accepted to U of Oregon, but in that case he would have to be a Duck.
When will NEC decisions for trumpet come out. I have a friend who has a son waiting on NEC for Trumpet.
I was told Thursday, 3/30 for all NEC official decisions, though my child was already given an unofficial one.
Any word on MSM? Not waiting on acceptance but once these are out my son can make a roommate decision and I’ll feel so much better! lol
