bump.......

aab123,

No, but when I lived in the city I went to Brearley.

Oh, my best friend just got into this program. She just got the letter (postmarked March 15) though cause we're in Italy and mail is super slow. Her stats are something like:

anyone else?

fatcookie (btw. looking at your other posts, hi michelle =P... i'm in your genetics class) you said you're waiting for gov school decisions? which gov school?

is money the problem here and is getting into, say, wharton, the ultimate goal? both programs are great, but i hear that if you're accepted into LBW you're very likely to get in (is this true, anyone?)

in any case, yang and i were both rejected from gov school of int'l relations as finalists. as you very well know, he's @ huntsman and i was accepted to wharton for next year.. so not going to gov school didn't really hurt (and i actually don't think i did anything that useful over the summer.. in retrospect, neither did he).

anyway, dunno what my point is anymore. but you guys know for sure now anyway.. um. yeah. wait i guess you're going then. cuz i heard nobody got in for int'l... again. what's WITH our school

hi, i can give some information as someone who participated in LBW last summer. you guys can ask me any questions you have.

for the record, i was accepted into wharton (during regular decision) after attending LBW.

scagneas, what were your stats & ec's?

do you think LBW helped your chances?

Thanks.

these are my stats for when i applied to lbw:

sat: 1530 (moved to 1590 later)
gpa: 4.0uw 5.0 w (moved to 3.97/4.97)
I am doing the full IB diploma, I had a perfect 45 when i applied for lbw and am maintaining that.
rank: 1/150ish throughout 9th - 12th grades.

EC's: community service steward for school, president of entrepreneurial club, organized 2 shave your head for cancer campaigns that raised combined 25k, organized tsunami relief fundraiser that raised 15k, internationalism committee chair, captain of school basketball/soccer/tennis teams, yearbook editor, school newspaper editor, school humor magazine editor, school literary magazine poetry editor, tutor inner-city kids 4hrs a week, information systems intern at US consulate in toronto, interned for a real estate agent in potomac maryland, give guitar lessons in my neighborhood every week.

other: i lived in 5 different countries while growing up, talked about it in my essay and how i would bring an international perspective. indian ethnicity.

lbw probably helped my chances because the year before us the acceptance rate to wharton was something like 75%. my year was probably under 25% though, most of the people from the program didnt get in. i actually got deferred from early admission and then was admitted in the regular round (4 people from my LBW group, including me, had this happen to them... all guys btw. 5 girls and 4 guys got in early).

btw, im not going to wharton even though i got in.

scagneas - can u talk about your expereince at LBW?
was it worthwhile?
where were the dorms? classes?
did you have a good time?
do u reccomend it?

looks like you wouldve got in anyway. =/

hey scag, just curious.. where are you going instead?

academic experience was good, social was terrible. i lived in the quad housing which is pretty crappy, although having Ac was pretty sweet. also the area in front of our housing was nice, we had a dance there and frisbee often. the gym membership is like 20 bucks a day... pretty ridiculous.

the reasons for me not liking the social aspect: almost everyone at the program, with the exception of maybe 10 people, were incredibly rich, stuck up, overprivileged and arrogant. all of them know that they can just get through life on daddy's money... they are not friendly at all, judgemental. cliques were formed within the first 3 hours of arrival. without a doubt they were intelligent, but you cant be surprised with such an uppity atmosphere at a 1 month summer program that cost 5 grand (they gave me a lot of financial aid, this is the only reason i went).

i must admit, however, that the academic aspect is pretty awesome. you take classes in huntsman hall (where wharton students have classes), you get advised on business plan creation (pm me for more info on this) by wharton students, you meet CEOs, you take field trips to the 76ers home court and meet the president of comcast and get a tour of the sixers' arena including locker rooms, you meet super rich and successful and nice and helpful entrepreneurs and venture capitalists, you take marketing courses from tenured wharton profs... its spectacular.

however, if youre looking to make friends, dont go. its a horrible atmosphere. if you want to learn about business and are really interested in wharton, i couldnt recommend a better atmosphere.

i went looking for both; i was thoroughly rewarded in one aspect and amazingly disappointed and let down in the other. this is one of the reasons i did not attend wharton, as i did not want to be in such a cutthroat and elitist group.

im attending UMD on a full scholarship covering all costs and will be in the honors program.

Is it true that they do 30 boys and 30 girls?

yes it is.

Anyone know what the acceptance percentage is?

my year (summer of 2004) they accepted 60 people from ~250 applicants... so about 25%, just a little higher than penn's.

Hi,

I'm a 11th grader from Singapore, and had applied and got accepted into the program for 2005. (PSAT > 1400, GPA>4.0, rank 1st in combined 9/10/11 GPA)
IB program, International School

Would appreciate if anyone could give me some inputs about the quality of the program and why it would be worth doing.

Q. Are the classes taken by good faculty / external business leaders OR are they taken by undergrad/grad students at Wharton?

Q. Is it really difficult to get in, or do they simply select the first 60 who apply?

any other inputs appreciated !

To SingaporeGirl and others:

I have heard that kids in the program are very snobbish and that it is isn't worth the money. In addition, the overall concensus from many is that the program is not a huge contribution to your applicaiton. Lastly, it is simply not worth the money and the kids are snobby (as Scagneas has stated). It just sounds wayyy too expensive for what its worth...i didnt apply o but i wouldnt go.

my friend from singapore applied last year and got in last year. what school are you from? she's in HCJC.

Well, I'm Singaporean but I'm studying in an International School overseas, and have been for most of my life.
