Congratulations! Really nice job bringing your SAT score up 290 points, that is a super improvement. The 970 SAT should qualify you for Bright Futures scholarship too if you are a Floridian! Nice going!

Did not get into USF today after applying on Oct. 31. Starting to regret that I went there last April for there Stampede to Success and flew to Tampa for Spring Break from South Carolina. Congrats to the people who got into USF though. I might look at the school down the road on Interstate 4 in Orlando jk!

I just got my acceptance letter today!!! For those of you offered merit Schlorships were any of you out of state? How long was the wait before you received the schlorship letter?

i just checked my status and it still says that they havent reached a final decision…i submitted my ACT scores on the 30th how long from when everything was submitted till u guys heard back?

Where do they get the money to send so many thousands of dollars in scholarship money to people who half-assed their way through school…? I’m NOT talking about people on CE, but mainly the potheads in my classes who have like 2.3-2.8 unweighted GPAs and actual Fs and Ds for semester grades…

Come on, USF doesn’t admit too many students with 2.3 GPAs; I think the weighted GPA average for admitted freshmen is around 3.70. Too, there are no more potheads at USF than at other colleges.

I’m not saying there are more at any other campus… That wasn’t even the point of my question.

I’m just curious as to where they get the money or motivation to offer thousands of dollars in scholarship money to my classmates whose stats I know are really, really, bad. I mean, I don’t personally think 3-5 Fs scattered about in your high school career should eliminate all chances of getting into a tier 3 college, but what’s the motivation behind recruiting these kids with low GPAs and ACT/SAT scores? Maybe it’s because I go to an IB school and these kids would likely do a lot better elsewhere.

Denard, I’m not sure what’s going on with the potheads at your school with the lower GPAs and test scores getting scholarships. Maybe they are getting scholarships that we don’t know about from the local Hemp Society? If they are doing a rigorous IB track, even with a few bad grades they may be still attractive to USF admissions. I can assure you though that USF doesn’t have enough money to throw away actively recruiting students that are not likely to graduate. Too, don’t always believe what other students tell you–lots of people lie or stretch the truth. By far, most of the scholarships offered by USF and USF donors have a minimum GPA requirement of 3.00 for consideration of award. Many of the scholarships are awarded only to students with financial need. Below is a link for some USF scholarships and required criteria.

My daughter has a 27 ACT and over 4.0 weighted and got no scholarship offers from any school, including USF. She has had no Fs or Ds and only one C in eighth grade algebra. She was president of honor society, vice president of Best Buddies and has held down part time jobs. She is not a pothead and she goes to a well regarded non-IB public high school.

I wish it were so that USF was throwing around scholarship money, but I think that the potheads you refer to are either lying to you, or getting money for financial need or athletics.

Well one of them happens to be my cousin, and he has a decent GPA (4.0 weighted, 3.3 unweighted), but he had a 490 on two SAT sections, and a 510 on the other, but he got $6,000, and someone with slightly better scores who applied back in September was offered $12k (she already accepted it and is dedicated to go there). They even offered me $36k, and I didn’t even apply… I guess the main thing that piqued my curiosity is that they’re offering a lot more money than pretty much every other Florida university, and I didn’t know if they had just gotten a huge donation or what. I’m not saying that the school is bad or anything… I just wondered why they can offer so much money that the others aren’t willing to shell out.

Well, it has to be more than merit – the kids you reference must offer something to the school that other students do not - my daughter’s grades and test scores were much higher and she was offered nothing (and we certainly could have used the money).

Perhaps your cousins are members of an under-represented minority? Even if so, the scores seem awfully low to get any sort of merit aid.

This is pretty much cementing her decision to attend FSU.

This deal with Dnerd’s high school classmates getting scholarship offers at USF got blown out of proportion a little. I’ll take Dnerd’s word that they got scholarships–good for them. Certain scholarships can have very specific, narrow criteria for eligibility. USF offers hundreds of different scholarships. For example, there’s one only for music majors that play the flute. There are some only for photography students–there are lots of different scholarships. If a rich donor from Dixie County, Florida says his $10,000 scholarship is only to be given to the valedictorian from Dixie County high school each year, only Dixie HS grads will be eligible for the scholarship. There are many different scholarships with hundreds of different qualifying criteria. URM might be a criteria for some. I wish USF had more scholarships for every student, but they only have so much to spread around.

USF I am sure tries to be as generous as possible with scholarship awards, but I know they can only give out what they have. Unfortunately USF is tight for money now, just like other colleges. I got a scholarship last year that was double what USF was able to award me this year because the same money is not available for the scholarship.

So Dnerd, USF does award scholarships and your classmates may have received nice awards, but USF doesn’t have a printing press for money for scholarships and does the best it can do with its limited available financial resources. Across the board though, average students at USF can’t expect scholarship money being thrown at them, it isn’t going to happen.

First Time i Post in this USF Forum, however i applied in November and a week after the app i got accepted! 3.67 GPA 1420 SAT Good ECs | AP classes as well Honors and No job.

first i don’t considered USF as a excellent goal but i am beginning to like it.

JTaylor,
Sorry about the slip in scores, but you seemed pretty excited about UCF anyway, right? You’ll do fine!

DNerd, My daughter applied early – probably October. She’ll probably end up at FSU (so far away from Orlando!) although she hasn’t crossed USF off the list either – she likes Tampa and she likes the spacious USF campus and the admin and students at USF seemed really friendly. UF announces in February, but her odds are even at best there (and the whole “gator nation” mania is off putting to a non-football fan). I’m happy that she has a choice to make of two good schools.

LTG, President Obama is expected to announce in Tampa Thursday the beginning of the construction of a bullet train between Tampa and Orlando so your daughter can travel between Orlando and USF in Tampa quicker!
