"
just because you got in to Stanford doesn't necessarily mean you can make it through all four years!

i wish you all the best OP, however, it's going to be alot of work competing against 2400 and 2300 valedictorians.."

im glad you care about the Op best interests (laced with sarcasm)....HOWEVER your missing the fact that the kid has a 3.9 uw gpa not a 2.9...there are no standardized tests at Stanford so i am sure he'll do fine

congrats gman. Stanford can't be all 2300+

And Ailey, it's pretty tactless to tell and excited high school senior, who just got into the college of his dreams, that he's tactless. This board is about providing information. Although some kids might be hurting bad because they got rejected, it gives prospective applicants for regular decision and deferred applicants hope to think that their SAT scores aren't everything. If we weeded out every thread that may hurt someone's feelings then there'd be nothing to say.

AA probably played a role in the OP's decision but it's not right to say that it is the sole reason or even the main reason. Stanford wouldn't have taken him if he wasn't qualified otherwise. Yes, there was probably AA but is it the main reason? Most definitely not. The OP must have had something special that does not have to do with scores or being an URM.

Congratz! Your acceptance isn't that surprising honestly though. URM, lots of good ECs, shows passion w/ leadership and getting involved with your race, good rank, hardest courseload.

thank you all so very much, whether ur feedback is negative or positive, heart-warming or insulting, I take it all into consideration. I am a very possitive and optimistic kinda guy, so I try to not let things get to me.

At the same time, I am very sorry for those of you who took this post "the wrong way." I did not have bad intentions when posting this thread, I simply wanted to share my excitement and complete gratitude to all those who helped and advised me.

I have been waiting for this dream to become a reality and have worked my butt off for this moment and it came true.

I was reading some posts, and I strongly agree with the fact that the emails we got yesterday do not portray our characters. Whether we were rejected, accepted, or deffered it does not mean that we are any better "smarter," or more "colleged-material like" than each other. We all have something great about us, and regardless of where we go and what we do, we'll all do an awesome job. (i hope i do, im kinda scared now.)

Anyways though, specifically to Zaid, your post made my day. It is my passion to try and "inspire" others, that is why I try to do the kind of things I do.

Thanks again to all, once again, I am very humbled and honored to have been accepted.

gman, I hope I didn't come across as critical - it wasn't my intention. You have every right to be proud of yourself and your accomplishment. You've always come across as a special person, and your last post is very much in character. You are going to be a great addition to Stanford.

Congratulations- You sound like a wonderful, caring person. I am sure you will do wonderfully at Stanford....I hope you get to meet my D....she, too, is a caring person, and would never THINK to brag about her SAT scores...it sounds to me like Stanford knew what it was doing in some of the choices!

I said it before, and I'll say it again: IT IS NOT ALL ABOUT STATS!!!!!

you clearly deserved the admission if Stanford was looking for a leader who is involved in the community. What I don't understand is how you got a 690 in Spanish when you're a native (regardless that you're a bad test taker).

Anyways, leadership is something that very few ppl have, and you're very lucky to be one. Congrats! :D (PS: I'm a Junior in HS, so I can be more chill about your admission :p) Oh, and it doesn't hurt to add that your 'stats' encourage me a lot, unlike some 'Chance me!' threads with ppl getting 2300 + on SATs, taking like 20 APs, haha

Gman6855, I think you are a natural leader and wonderful role model for your peers. You could be President someday. No wonder Stanford took you.

sorry i guess my last post was bitter. i was just upset because i was lead to believe that grades and scores were the most important part of this process

sighhhh don't see the point in studying for finals anymore lol

Hey, from the Yale forum, congratulations Gman! This really is a great story, and I know if i would have had sub-2000 SAT, I would really have wanted to see this thread, URM or not, you have proven that it is possible to get in despite the heavy emphasis that everybody puts on a test that takes 3 hours, while downplaying the importance of those other 18 years of your life. I honestly cannot believe there are this many haters on the Stanford board, as I have always thought of it as a school that prides itself on admitting not on statistics but by character, a philosophy which seems to produce a very happy (indeed the happiest according to surveys) student body. You are really the kind of student that Stanford tries very hard to capture. Congratulations, you are a fantastic student, a fantastic person, and I'm sure you will be a fantastic Pine Tree (haha, your mascot is embarassing, couldn't resist!)

I also want to register my congratulations to you Gman. I am a college professor and sent this thread to my class (because we just finished the semester reading about how wealthy kids who are not among the most competitive applicants often get a huge advantage in admissions in elite schools - read The Price of Admissions, Creating a Class: Admissions and the Education of Elites,The Power of Priviledge: Yale and America's Elite Colleges, The Chosen and many other books that document this fact. I'm so proud of you and you will do FINE at Stanford. It's not about the SATs.

Please don't think like that...it is worth it, maybe just not in exactly the way you thought.....don't give up....you will eventually be rewarded.

lol i love how all of these 2400 SAT ppl think that being smart alone means anything at all. It doesnt. Its what you do with it that counts. And while you brag about scores, GMan is using what he has to change our world for the better. Thats why he got in and you didnt and wont. You are wasting your gift of intelligence on bravado and thinking that you are entitled to the world, like brains solely defines someone's worth. Perhaps Gman is the smarter one after all...

Alextheman, keep in mind that a lot of these people who are angry are the ones who didn't get in (and don't get mad at me for that, I got rejected as well). The more I read the happier this makes me. Good work gman, you definitely deserve it, and you'll be fine at Stanford so don't worry.
