My Daughter was accepted to UMass Amherst but they list her as an undeclared major within the Social and Behavioral Sciences Exploratory track. Thanks a mouthful. She applied for Poly Sci, is this what they do with all the kids so they can change their minds or find what fits them best? Pros and cons I guess. Anyone have information on this?
Might be a late reply, hope it helps anyways. Sometimes, if an applicant isn’t able to be admitted to their Major of choice (since the university is split into smaller “colleges” which houses each of the majors), they might be put into undecided. This is usually because they fit the requirements needed to be in the school itself, but they didn’t quite stand up to the competition for their major of choice. This usually happens the most to students who apply to Isenberg or Engineering. (However, most of them have backup majors they listed anyways). Anyways, I guess a pro could be that she’s free to change her mind any time before she chooses a major, instead of having to transfer between the schools in the case that she decided that she wanted to do something else. Con would be that doming might be a bit of a pickle. (Not completely sure on this one, but I heard that students who are accepted as undecided might be put into any of the housing areas, which means there might be a chance she would have to walk quite a bit to get to her classes).
