Accepted but not into engineering

My son was accepted Umass, but not into the college of engineering. He is trying to decide between URI where he was accepted into engineering, or go to Umass and then hope he can try again to get into engineering. Does anyone have advice about this experience or if engineering @ Umass is very difficult to get into? He has a 3.3 weighted gpa and got 600 on math SAT (1150) total.

I don’t think it is that hard to transfer in if your GPA as a freshman is high enough (I don’t recall what you need offhand, I am sure it is on the web site somewhere).

The real key I think is to make sure he takes the correct engineering classes, so that he is on the same track as other engineering students. If not he will have to take them anyway and it could delay his graduation.

My son is a freshman in engineering and only has one “real” engineering class per semester this year. The others are math, sciences and gen ed requirements. Go to the web site of the Engineering College and they have the course requirements listed. Make sure he takes the “right” math and science classes. You might also call the Dean of Engineering’s office to discuss the transfer requirements. UMass engineering is very well regarded (ranked the #1 public engineering program in New England the last I checked) and my son is enjoying his classes (although it’s a lot of work).

To hornetdad, I took your advise and called the COE. They said that it is easier to get into the COE while already enrolled at UMass than it is applying as a freshman. My son can also declare as early as his 2nd semester. All he needs it to have at least a 2.0. That is very encouraging information. Thanks for the tip.

Glad to help. Best of luck!
