Accepted but not school of choice

So I'm very happy that i've been accepted, but i got into a different program that i applied for. They sent me this message:

Congratulations on your admission to the College of Human Ecology at Syracuse University for the fall semester, 2010...Overall, your qualifications were competitive for Syracuse University. However, due to a highly qualified applicant pool, we are unable to admit you to your first-choice program. We determined that this alternative program of study matches your interests and credentials and is an appropriate entry point for you.

Is there any way I can change this?

any info would help, thanks

I was also wondering about this
How hard/easy is it to transfer to another college?

me too!
i got into my second choice, and i was wondering that exact thing.
i’m going to their accepted students day on the 23rd, and asking what they say about that

Neither of you say which was your first choice college on this thread…can u specify so I can respond??

mine was college of visual and preforming arts for an interior design major,
but i got into my second choice of school of education

Rodney – if you could respond to me as well … My D did not get into Newhouse, got into Whitman, her second choice. I have seen previous responses on this same issue; it sounded to me that she needed to be a pretty strong student her first year and then she might have a shot at moving to Newhouse (the admissions team at Newhouse actually made a point of saying that they accept a number of intra-school transfers). My question is, is this a likelihood or just a shot at consideration if my daughter does well (say, a 3.5 or above).

Thanks again for the advice – you have helped out in the past and I appreciate it again.

That happened to my younger D last year. She was accepted into Newhouse, but had applied to Musical Theater as first choice, and music performance as second choice.

Newhouse is hard to get into so we were kind of surprised.

She decided to go elsewhere.

my college of choice was the arts and sciences with undecided major. I was put into human ecology

Also, do the first year courses vary significantly depending on which college you go to?

okay…in order of posts:

js: since interior design is a restricted major, I am not sure if a intra-school transfer is possible after freshman year; you may want to call and find out; I’m not as familiar with that one, but I don’t think you can just call up to transfer into it before September

marjorie: please feel free to PM me at any time if you have a question that needs to be answered quicker; anyway, inter-school transfers to Newhouse ( or the addition for a dual program in your daughter’s case) are handled from top GPA to bottom; the person was correct who told you that 3.5 seems to be the magic number…my only concern in your daughter’s case is that Whitman intro courses tend to be a little harder than A&S and may make it difficult to hit that 3.5…what I would recommend is to make sure her A&S required courses are on the easy side to balance out the GPA so that she can maximize her chances after freshman year; they only look at Fall grades to make the decision…

convolver: your case is actually the most interesting; if SU is your #1 school, you could easily enter in human ec, take required A&S courses and easily transfer into A&S…in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if you called them up after you deposit (In may or June) and just ask them if you can move into A&S…can’t hurt…I actually know a freshman who did this last year from Engineering or education (I think) to A&S…but yes, to answer your question, the intro courses are the same for both schools…

thanks rodney for clearing that up

accepted into Communication and Rhetorical Studies, applied to for New House graphics, or advertising and VPA Art and design undecided for the fundamentals freshman year. I am confused because as a CRS student my electives are in college of art and sciences and I am blocked out from art and design courses except for into classes.

Anyone know if intro courses are the same for School of Ed and CAS? My D applied undecided A&S and was accepted into School of Ed. Wants to transfer to A&S and not “waste” a semester with courses she may not want/need.

50pics: CRS is very similar in coursework to certain majors in Newhouse; but not the graphics major; you can minor in Newhouse as well, but I’m not sure if the minor includes graphics…for the most part, all schools at SU (including Newhouse) have the CAS required core, but I have no idea about art and design rules…

iliketocook: you can work with your advisor to ensure that your intro courses coincide with ones necessary for A&S…extremely easy to do (and I would also pick up the phone after you deposit to see if you can just switch into A&S before September…I know a couple of kids who did this…depends on yield into A&S in May)…also, I think she might have been “second choiced” because of the CAS undecided…the way it works is I think if you declare, you are compared to others who apply for that particular major…all undecideds are compared together and I don’t think they waitlist into CAS-undecided, in fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a CAS waitlist…I may start a thread about that; may clear up some of the confusion…

For the rest of you, please let me know how this all goes; I have a junior interested in SU as well and I want to know where the flexibility is going forward.

thanks, rodney

I was also accepted into the College of Ecology which was not my college of choice and I wrote a letter and have now been accepted into Arts and Sciences … so I would suggest giving that a try.

^^there you go…and it’s not even May 1st…dbrenner; what was your first choice school?

I honestly wouldn’t worry about it.

Maybe you can transfer after 2 years, your best chance is to call the college directly and talk to your appointed Guidance Counselor and ask. I know for a fact that whatever what college and what school you get accepted into, a majority of your first 2 years will be General Education credits. So maybe the school that you got accepted into is a minor inconvenience that can be addressed in a couple years.

my first choice was whitman and then cas … i am feeling better now that i can just work towards whitman…

hey i’m just curious who did you write a letter to?

i wrote to admissions
