DS18 was accepted into CLA 10/24 (applied 1st week in Oct.). He will major in computer science, but applied to CLA instead of CSE as we hoped his chances for $$$ would be better. We got the snail mail acceptance letter yesterday, but no mention or honors or scholarships. It’s his 1st choice, but we are OOS (IL) and can’t afford it without a scholarship. If he did not hear right away, does that mean that either he probably isn’t getting anything or that he has to wait until Feb/March? The possibility of waiting so long only to find out he can’t go is stressing me out!
Here are his stats:
GPA 4.028 academic (weighted?), 3.625 all subject (unweighted?)
ACT 32
SAT 1430
5 AP classes by the time he graduates and lots of honors classes
A few ECs that he has been involved in all 4 years, now in leadership positions
Part time job
Not a national merit scholar - we didn’t even know it was a thing back when he took the PSAT!
I’d appreciate anyone’s input or experience on this. He’s our oldest and we had no idea of the pressure and amount of work these applications take, on top of loads of school work and actual work!
I would call admissions and ask about timeline for rolling out scholarship offers. At our nearby U, where D went, final scholarship/financial aid packages went out in March. Some students with good stats got “you get at least $X” with their acceptance letters. Every school may handle it differently, so call.
Hopefully S applied to safeties that you are sure he will get into and that you can afford. Even if not his top choice, having those schools in the wings can help the anxiety.
We are in the same boat and it seems that UMTC as well as many other schools do not provide the scholarship information with the acceptance letter. Based on what I have read in some of these older post, UMTC begins to send information about scholarships from the middle of November through the end of March. Also some of these scholarships do not seem to be GPA or Score specific or at least I have not seen it. However based on your son’s stats, he should be able to get a scholarship. I would hate to wait until the end of March in order to make a decision.
My D, who was accepted about two weeks ago, got an email from UMNTC that had boxes to check of different things that might apply to her, I think for scholarship consideration. Things like whether you were a first in family to attend college, had parents in military, were of various underrepresented backgrounds, etc. I didn’t really get a good look at it and she quickly clicked through and submitted it. Not sure if this is a factor, but we are in state.
My son (OOS, US Citizen living in India) applied to UMTC early August. Status still says application is complete and decisions will be rolled out in early October…any OOS has been admitted to UMTC Computer Engineering program so far?
Thanks for talking me off the wall everyone! He did get accepted to a safety that gave a great award (with their acceptance), so we know he has that option. We’ll just hope for the best with UMTC and wait patiently. Truthfully, at this point I’m just really happy he finally submitted his apps and I can stop nagging him every day!
