Scholarship timing

Has anyone talked to anyone at Michigan about their timing of scholarships. DS was deferred and now accepted, which is great, but he will decline if given no merit money (other good offers, but would rather go here if money wasn't an issue, but we all know it has to play into this game for most of us). I know that merit money is hard to come by, so I am wondering if we haven't heard, does that mean he won't get any? We know he won't get need based aid. Frankly, I need us to be able to move onto other options if we have all of our facts.

How is his stat? Are you in state or oos? Most of the large scholarships have been announced, but there should be some smaller ones left. You should be able to find out his FA on Wolverine Access soon.

It’s possible there would be departmental scholarships to award left to come but the interview scholarships for >than $10,000 were extended to EA admits…, as far as “moving on” most out of state families with low need know to go into a Michigan app with eyes wide open as Michigan is pretty frank about increasing out of state student because they pay more…only you can decide how much you are willing to spend and to communicate that with your son while you are waiting for finaid notification if you have not yet set a “budget” for him.

We know how much we are willing to pay, we just are trying to figure out if there is some money that hasn’t been announced yet and when that financial aid notification will occur. His stats are very strong, but for OOS, we understand that is hard to get. We let him apply understanding that it was a long shot, but heck someone has to get it, and he has the numbers so why not try. For those of you instate…you are very very lucky to have such a good university in your state. Our instate options aren’t anywhere near as strong. You should feel fortunate :)

Much of the money has been handed out already or kids have already been invited to interview for the big scholarships. What is left will be then given to the interviewees who didn’t win, then other to students. Finally, I have heard that Michigan then reexamines the amount of scholarship money they have after kids have declined offers and then proceeds to redivide that money up to the next tier of students.

There is not a huge chance that your child will receive any money, but it is a possibility. I imagine by about April 14th you should know how much money he has received.

Best of luck in his endeavors!

For my DD (we are oos) Michigan is more expensive than MIT, so more or less Michigan is off the list. We are middle class and UMich didn’t offer any scholarship money. MIT is far generous and at least gave us some scholarship.

UMich does not give much need based aid to oos, but most of the top privates do. On the other hand, most top privates do not give merit scholarships but there are some from UMich. So one should be aware of this before applying.

Yes, they are known to be very stingy when it comes to OOS students, which is absolutely ridiculous when you look at their $52,000 price tag. I was lucky enough to be invited for an interview scholarship. Only 50 kids are invited to it, and it is their most prestigious scholarship. Other than that, they have scholarships of honor for each of the colleges. Often, many more in-state kids get these than OOS, and I have seen evidence of standards being lowered to give these to in-state kids.

It’s really a shame, because (as with me) often merit scholarships are the only hope for OOS kids to go to Michigan. If they don’t get any, which is common for even the best of students, they are pretty much shut out.

I agree and that is the reason why students apply to many colleges. You will not know about need based aid and/or merit scholarship until you apply. It is always better to spend $100 on application if you have the stats than wondering…what if.

I agree, but there are stat about merit aid and need base aid from all schools that one should look into before applying. UMich is just one of those schools that do not offer much aid to oos (merit or need base). Many other public colleges are just the same or even worse. As for the scholarship disbursement, there are money donated to the public schools specific for in state students. That’s why there are more merit aid opportunities and seems to be less competitive for in state students. I don’t think it is a shame. It is just how a public institute run.

I’m wondering, for OOS, has your need-based aid matched the ‘sample packages’ on the FinAid Office website?
( http://www.finaid.umich.edu/TopNav/AboutUMFinancialAid/SampleAidPackages.aspx</a> ) What income bracket do you mean exactly by ‘middle class’?

Aware or not of the stingy nature of Michigan, I personally see no reason not to risk $100 for an application on the hopes of it being you that gets one. If a kid has Ivy like stats, somebody gets lucky, so I agree with the person that said don’t leave wondering. My post was really about the timing of knowing the facts are all on the table so he can begin making decisions. My post was not about the equity or inequity of scholarships for OOS.

I apologize for unfocusing your conversation. Most of the money has been given out. There is a small chance, likely even smaller than the probability of him getting one in the first place, that he will receive merit-based scholarship.

Don’t give up on scholarships yet! I got offered a $10k per year scholarship today. I’m in state if that helps.

@TomTiconderoga do you mind me asking…did you find out via email, regular mail or by checking the portal?

I’m out-of-state, same thing happened to me. Deferred EA but accepted a month later. Waiting for scholarship, if not, I’m goin to rutgers.

@bsmom123 No email yet, only on the portal.

Juniperus…the OOS samples did not accurately match our situation. At this point my daughter has only received a subsidized loan for $3500. No grants or work study. She is a Ross pre-admit, but was not invited to apply or interview for any scholarships. I do not know if there is any point in waiting further.

For CoE, all scholarships have been announced. If you did not receive a notice yet the next couple days, you are not getting one. Info from FA office this morning at Campus Day.

DS received a letter today, dated 4/14/14, offering an additional $60k/4 year scholarship (to be combined with a $45k/4.5 year scholarship - Jean Fairfax Scholarship). This one is the Presidential Scholarship for OOS students. I looked online, but there was no other information describing what qualifies a student other than being OOS.

Before this scholarship UMich was unaffordable and he has mentally moved on to a different school. It’s a shame it was not mailed a couple of weeks sooner so he could have considered it in his decision.

Just wanted to post this so you would know that they are not finished passing out scholarships for incoming freshman … and for next year’s students to not rule them out I guess until the end!

Good luck to all of you that are still hoping for aid!
