:)

Hey dannix3, I’m also looking for apartments since I have pets that aren’t allowed in the dorms, and I don’t think I’ll look for a roommate because my white cat loves to leave his fur on black clothes and my bulldog loves to chew on shoes and control remotes… I’ve looked for apartments on craigslist but haven’t had much luck it’s mostly apartment complexes, and then I went to google some reviews and they’re all awful like “carpet stinks, leaks, got broken into twice, rip off, etc…”

What I’ve gathered is that places in the northwest area are the safest, specially west of I-75. Also the area southwest of UF, by archer road, next to i-75 is somewhat safe. The rent numbers aren’t that bad, or maybe I’m just used to the expensive beach rent up here… but I’ve seen 1/1 in the 500-650 range; some include water and electricity. My orientation isn’t coming until july 18th, so I’ll have to plan on coming down there in the next month or so to start looking at places. Just make sure that whenever you look at a place, don’t just look at the model, make those people show you the actual unit before you sign a lease. I’ve read horror stories where the model was gorgeous and they signed a lease then got the keys to their apt. and it was a total s*** hole and the management people turned out being your worst enemies after you signed.

I’ve looked at this ones online, I’ll have to go down there to look at them and make sure they’re not s.holes. If you scroll down on the website it gives you links to other apartment places managed by the same company.

I have been living up here (I go to Santa Fe) so I can give some insight. You don’t really have to find a roommate - a lot of places do roommate matching. And while it does not seem ideal, a lot of people like it. Sometimes it can be better than a roommate you already know. You’ll meet more people this way, and actually, random roommates typically respect your space and boundaries more than roommates you may have previously known (you don’t have to worry as much about your food being eaten, or borrowing stuff without asking). Not saying that won’t happen - it might still. But I am saying usually it is better. Even if you don’t like your roommates, the good thing is these apartments up here are set up for these situations, and you can lock your door to your room, too. Most people live either off of 35th, or 20th. 20th is like, west of campus… kind of by 75. It’s close to the side of campus where Southwest Rec is, and stuff. But the good thing is buses run constantly, and are pretty convenient. I think that the apartments over there are nicer (The Estates, Cabana Beach, Canopy, Woodlands, Spyglass, etc). 35th is off of Archer, right before you get to campus - there’s a lot of places over there too. It’s close to Shands. The apartments over there are University Commons, The Enclave, University Terrace, Lexington Crossing, and a bunch more that I can’t think of right now. And there are also a lot of places downtown, which is pretty close to campus, but you’ll probably have to pay a lot for it (or live in a place that isn’t nice).

If you guys give me a price range and what you’re looking for, I can help you out more. I don’t know anything about The Gardens - sorry. From looking at the map though, I can tell you that’s REALLY far and you will have a hard time getting to school. You can’t really park at UF - it’s almost impossible, and plus parking passes are expensive (and don’t guarantee you a spot). You’ll have to take the bus there, and I just think it might get hard to do that everyday, living so far.

Also, don’t read too much into online reviews. You’re going to hear a lot of stuff like that, because people are ALWAYS more likely to share the negative things as opposed to spending time to write a positive review. I know a lot about a lot of different apartments, and I can tell you which places have problems and which do not (like, I would never recommend living in Cabana Beach to ANYONE! The other apartments in that area are great though) and I can tell you what areas are safe, too. I really wouldn’t recommend living out that far west though (past 75).

Thanks for the insight UfHopeful

Well here’s my thing, I really can’t be taking the bus that much, as an architecture student I always have a crap load of stuff to carry around with me: lots of big and heavy modeling and drafting tools, lots of plans and big models that don’t want to get messed up on a bus ride plus it’s nice having the convenience of putting that stuff away in my car while i’m not using it so i don’t have to walk around with it the whole day, so I think I’m forced to having a parking pass and do lots of walking (I’m used to getting to school at 6am, just to find a good spot and then sleep in my car til class time)

I’m really not that picky with apartments i don’t care if it’s big or small, if it has a pool or gym, washer and dryer doesn’t matter, I just want somewhere clean and safe, with an a/c that makes you feel like you live in the artic circle, preferably pre-wired for security systems (adt, safetouch, etc.) cats, and dogs over 50lbs must be welcomed. My rent would be 650 max (preferably in the 500’s), I don’t want to spend more on rent unless the rent includes some utilities… any suggestions?? also what are parts of town to stay away from? (da hood, ghetto, loud party zone… etc)

For everyone looking for somewhere to live in Gainesville-
I would suggest getting on Facebook Marketplace. A lot of students post apartments and houses that they are leasing or subleasing. I have had friends get places REALLY cheap because a lot of students still have leases when they graduate/decide to leave/etc… and they are just looking to get something out of it since they will be paying the remaining amount of time of their lease regardless.
Plus with Facebook you are able to usually see a little bit about who you are talking to and its wayyy less sketchy than craigslist lol.

Thanks a lot for your help! So far I’m looking into The Enclave and I’ve heard positive things about Jefferson and Stoneridge I believe they’re called? But I’m going up for orientation May 27 (unless i find out it’s too incovenient to show up around memeorial day) so i’ll be able to investigate more.

The Enclave is really, really nice. I know people who live there, and they are really happy with it. I think that’s a good area to live in, as far as traffic, distance to school and noise level (not too loud over there, I don’t think). Jefferson is nice too, but it’s kind of starting to fall apart - I have friends who live there, and they have literal holes in their walls. However, they’re a bunch of rowdy boys so that may be why. I have girl friends who live there too, and their place is not as bad as my friends who are boys, but it’s still starting to show signs of wear and tear. I think the place was slapped together really quick, and it’s not holding up very well. Plus, it’s like party central over there because it’s walking distance to downtown, and midtown if you REALLY want to walk that far. It’s always pretty noisy. And to get into your apartment, you can either enter from like, a back door outside, or you can enter through a really weird inside hallway (like the inside of a hotel). It’s nice to have a few friends who live in Jefferson, and it’s really not THAT bad, but I don’t think I’d want to live there. Also, there is a parking garage, which is sort of sketchy. It really just depends what you’re looking for. I’d pick The Enclave over Jefferson. I do not know anything about Stoneridge.

I don’t really think there are any parts of town to avoid - Gainesville in general is pretty safe. I can tell you that Cabana Beach is not the best place to live - not because of the area, the rest of the apartments in that area are fine. It’s just a lot of sketchy people live there, and bring a lot of weird people in and out, and it’s really cheap so I think it just sort of attracts the wrong people. I have a friend who lives there, and she was assaulted. Things like that happen there all the time. I know that The Woodlands allows pets, and it’s really nice. It’s kind of in a weird area (west of campus) but a lot of apartments are in that area, so a lot of students live there. It’s pretty safe, too. It can get loud, but typically isn’t too bad. That’s probably in your price range. Gainesville Place is pretty nice, too. It’s on 35th, which I think is a really good location. And it’s definitely in your price range. Same with Lexington Crossing. Most places allow pets, there is usually just a one time fee that you have to pay. You just have to call and ask.

As for the bus - I have a friend who is an architecture major who takes the bus to school all of the time. You will probably be working in the studio most of the time, and leaving your stuff in your locker, anyways. That’s what she does. I am just warning you, parking is literally impossible on the UF campus and if you find a spot, you still have to take a bus from the parking lot to your classes (the parking lots are literally that far). The only one that isn’t bad is the commuter lot (you will park here for preview), but that fills up quickly and is still pretty far from where your classes will be.

Awesome, sounds like you have some experience. I’ve been looking at places that are decent and places that are dirt cheap.

As long as i’m not breathing mold or lead I don’t care about the condition of the rest of the apartment. I don’t mind painting/cleaning or whatever it may be if the rent is a good price.

I went yesterday to the area and visited a ton of places. I was wondering what you think of the following areas:

Gateway at Gainesville
Greenwich Green
College Park (building 1536)
Sun Island (Probably sun harbour w/ the townhouses)

I know they’re kinda old places, but are they safe? It didn’t seem like anywhere in Gainesville was particularly run down or full of ****.

Do you guys know if we have to take the math/chem/foreign language placement tests since we’re transfers if we have fulfilled requirements?

I’m sorry, but this wait is ridiculous.

^ Tell me about it. It’s officially May now…

So has anyone heard back who applied for fall to CALS? The deadline to hear is June 15, but I’m really hoping I’ll hear before then.

@julius305:

I asked my college about the placement, and they said that if we have an AA already we shouldn’t have to take any placement tests. If that’s showing in your degree audit (mine asks for CLASR) then just ignore it and when you meet with your adviser on the orientation day they should take it off your record, they’re the only ones that can… Just make sure you bring a copy of your final transcript with you to the orientation is what she said.

@skmorris2013 I also applied to CALS, I would love to tell you I have heard back but I haven’t. :frowning: A friend of mine did hear back but it was for the summer term. I really hope they don’t wait until last minute aka June 15 to tell us because I have a lot depending on this acceptance!

i’m glad to know i’m not the only one still waiting. this is literally going to be the death of me. the theatre advisor left me a message last week informing me he’d be sending decisions may 2-9th so that i’d hear by then. finally jeeze…fingers crossed a bunch of us hear this week!!

lol scgirl, I feel your pain. I want nothing more then to hear back this week along with finishing this semester. I suppose at the worst it’s six more weeks for CALS. Hopefully since they do CC transfers first I’ll know withing 1-2 weeks.

Ok, So I actually went to UF and talked to an adviser on Friday. She told me that they were waiting on my spring grades to make a decision. I had NO idea. I would definitely not have sent my grades!! Well, at least I know something.

well what kind of advisor did you speak to? like which school was it? cause if that’s the case for all of them then i’m basically never finding out haha. i won’t get my spring grades until mid or late june. we haven’t even taken our finals yet. so i don’t think all of the advisors will be basing their decisions on spring grades…

Maybegator, so does that mean we should send our spring grades as soon as possible? I’m wondering if that’s why I haven’t gotten a decision yet either, my grades were just released today.
