ACCEPTED FOR ACTING or DIRECTING 2017

Hi! I am a current Freshman at the University of Michigan’s Theatre Department. I made this account specifically to invite all ACCEPTED incoming freshman to the BFA Acting or BFA DIRECTING class of 2017 to the incoming freshman facebook group!! Here you can get to know us, the juniors and seniors of next year and each other!! The Facebook group is named “University of Michigan BFA Acting/Directing 2017” We are so INCREDIBLY excited to meet all of you! Welcome to the best school and program on Earth.

-The Freshman class of 2016

Hi, I didn’t receive an answer yet but I am in love with UMICH and this program and I was wondering if you had any advice on keeping calm during the wait? haha

The wait is always the hardest part. The best thing you can do is put the entire process out of your mind! What happens is ALWAYS for the best. If you say “I have done everything I can do, hopefully the professors think I am a good fit for what they can offer” then I promise it’ll get easier! There are another round of auditions next weekend! So the decisions are still being made.

Haha ok! Thanks so much! I’ll try my best!

Hi! I’m also freaking out over the wait, as Michigan is my favorite program. Can I ask when you guys heard back, last year? I know this upcoming Friday is the last audition/interview date, but I’m not sure what the timing is like after that.

Thanks! Looking forward to hearing!

There is really no way to predict the dates. It depends on the pool of applicants. Some have already received notification. If your score is high enough you may be accepted early into the next week. Our class was all over the place when it comes to acceptances. Many were notified around the time they told us we would be. Some were told a lot later, and on a few occasions people got the call/email only a couple days after their auditions. It is completely relative and depends on what kind of talent shows up to audition!

How are students notified?

Students are notified by email and on wolverine access under the admissions decision tab (it should say something like admissions decision, I can’t remember). Some students receive a phone call from the dean informing them of their admission as well as an email. I don’t know if the decision to call actually MEANS anything. It could but who knows. But everyone receives an email.

My D has been accepted to the BFA Acting program. She’s torn between U-M and
DePaul. How do you like the program and what were a few of your deciding factors??

Got a ? For you. My dear D has been wait listed for umich acting program. She really loves the program and hopes to come off the wait list. Does this happen often or should we just be happy to be considered and move on?

concernedbaba: Well the most notable difference that your daughter will find at UofM is the class size. DePaul admits a very large number of students to yield about 52 in the freshman class. The Freshman class at UofM is almost always 16. Some variation of 16. This year we have 8 boys and 8 girls. The classes are unbelievably individualized.
actingchicsmama: People DO get in off the waitlist. Don’t give up hope! Haha Consider all you options but by no means should you completely give up. It is a FANTASTIC accomplishment to be waitlisted as well and it’s important to remember that!

actingchicsmama: my D was accepted into the UMich BFA acting program. Just looking at the sticker price, she won’t be able to go unless she gets a scholarship. We can’t be the only ones facing this. I’m sure people will come off the wait list. We don’t know a ton about the program, only that the MT there has a fabulous reputation. My D’s first choice was DePaul, and go figure, she didn’t get a callback. DePaul student’s get the opportunity to do both straight acting and musical theatre, which is nice. We’ve seen three shows there (one musical) and the acting was outstanding. I can’t compare the programs at this point–need to do our research on UMich since she just got the acceptance letter recently. I know both are competitive and have great reps. But if you want to think about things other than the program–Chicago or Ann Arbor, Price Tag–any scholarships, facilities–DePaul will have a multi-million new building this fall (drooling). I do know this about the audition/feel from my D. DePaul felt like family/like real people. She felt cared for even at the audition to which she got no callback. At Michigan, no vibes, not much to report, really. We are simply amazed that she has been invited into the program. At the DePaul auditions there was so much energy and good mix of light-heartedness and the reality that not everyone will get a call-back kind of talk. My D had her heart set on DePaul for a year, so it was the big disappointment for her. So, I’m biased toward DePaul, but I can’t say it’s very thought out. I need to get on Michigan’s site tomorrow. Concernedbaba, have her spend a bunch of time looking at both school’s 4 year curriculum on their websites.

Thanks Resrchmom! My Ds audition experience with DePaul was IDENTICAL. Trying not to put too much stock in that as DePaul’s audition was a very different process than all other schools. U-M wasn’t bad…just the typical mater-of-fact process utilized by most other schools. We’re visiting both in the coming weeks. Thanks, again, and good luck to your D.

Thanks UMichBFA2016! Class size certainly a concern though DePaul is insisting they’ll be 32 frosh,… which is still sizable and more than the 18 that UM is expecting. My biggest concerns are the comparative reputations of both, the lack of a senior showcase at UM, and the cost comparisons. Could you comment on the first two?

Hey everyone! A few things to cover most of the basses at once  The University of Michigan’s Acting program had it’s first senior showcase last year in LA. Showcases will be performed from every year on. The senior class decides if they would like to showcase in LA, New York, or Both (or at all). It is a topic that is brought up freshman year so we have four years to think about it. As for reputation…I, for one, was completely blindsided by the power and scope this department has in the industry. The Alumni list is extremely impressive and extensive but that isn’t even the half of it. The Michigan “M” on your resume opens up so many doors and networks. We have one of the biggest BFA networks in the country and we pride ourselves heavily on that. I honestly believe (from the prospects of the outgoing senior class of 2012) that the gap in reputation between the two departments (MT and Acting) here are only present during the few months of audition season. Once you graduate from this program the gap disappears. I mean the proof is in the pudding once you are out in the real world. The industry recognizes that the University of Michigan produces the next Mufasa and the next Darth Vadar and the next Darren Criss and the next cast members of shows like The Wire, Bones, Smash, Chicago Fire. We are everywhere and the world sees. A Michigan Acting resume is golden. Industry professionals call us the “Michigan Mofia.” Because our names tend to be in the playbills and credits of every major project in New York and LA. As for the more personal aspects of this school…I think my decision to come here was influenced at LEAST 60% by the atmosphere. I visited the school after before being accepted and after about an hour, had decided that THIS was where I belonged. I had not visited a more accepting, family oriented, FUN, inviting, nurturing school. I honestly felt like I was a part of the gang. After attending this school for almost a year…I can honestly say that there is no where like it on earth. The amount of TALENT at this school is astonishing but is greatly overshadowed by the amount of dedication our professors have to every aspect of our lives. They are our parents and grandparents and silly aunts and uncles. They are real industry professionals that work constantly outside of the school. The professors here INSPIRE me. I work so much harder because of them. We leave classes every day thinking about the pearls of wisdom we just received. I would strongly consider taking a tour of this school. Audition days are stressful for auditors and misleading for actors. The MT and Acting department auditions about 1250 students total and the Acting department makes up for about 550 of those students so you can imagine the amount of concentration it takes to eventually dwindle that down to 16 (that was another thing, MT shoots for 18-20, but Acting shoots for 16.) Out of my choices last spring, I could NOT be more satisfied with my decision to pick the University of Michigan. It is GREAT for the parents as it is a top 20 ranked liberal arts college which requires us to take a good number of NON-music classes to graduate promoting a rounded performer and encouraging a double major. It is also GREAT for the students as in it is LITERALLY the most stereotypical college town you will ever find. It has that college atmosphere every high schooler thinks about that really can’t be found in big cities like LA and NYC. Everything that you could picture a “college” set from a movie looking like is actually the University of Michigan haha Also…A large fact for me when choosing between BFA schools in Ann Arbor, New York, and Chicago, is that you are here to learn. It IS great to be surrounded by all of that hustle and bustle of the acting world but, at least for me, I found that the large city BFA programs would quickly pull my attention away from my studies. That’s at least how I looked at it when deciding on schools, but it all depends on how you work honestly.

SO This was a novel lol Main points to focus on

-There IS a Senior Showcase
-Reputation of the Acting department is GREAT in the professional world!
-The vibes coming from this school are so positive and friendly and family oriented that it hurts (hurts so good)
-TOUR to get a real view of the school personality
-Ann Arbor is far enough away from the big cities so that you aren’t distracted but since it is only 2 and a half hours away from Chicago, any opportunties that come up you won’t be missing out on! (I’m taking a road trip with some BFA’s tomorrow to audition for a feature film!)
-It’s all up to you so take your time deciding and ask PLENTY of questions!

Thank you UmichBFA2016! This helps tremendously!

This is great information UmichBFA2016. Thank you!
