I was accepted to UIUC for an alternate major of Chemical Engineering instead of my first choice Computer Science.

How difficult is it for a Transfer admit to change majors? How long and will I be unable to work towards a degree in CS unless a change is permitted? I would also be interested in a double major of both perhaps...

UIUC has the earliest acceptance date, May 1, which is why I'm concerned as I'm still waiting to hear from CMU, Cornell, Rice, and USC. I've been accepted for CS at UT Austin, UC San Diego, TX A&M, and Rose-Hulman. UIUC was my top choice for CS, and while Austin may be comparable I received a much better financial aid package from UIUC.

Your first opportunity to transfer is into sophomore year. You can also attempt after sophomore year into junior year. Transfer is not guaranteed even if you have very high grades. Ability to transfer depends on number of slots that open up and number of people desiring transfer. CS often has not many openings for too many desiring to transfer. Moreover, if you attempt transfer after first year, your high school grades and test scores will be a factor and fact that you were rejected for CS as a freshman will be a factor weighed against you. If attempting transfer into junior year, your high school record, test score, and fact of initial rejection will not be factors considered.

Bottom line, if you accept UIUC, you should do so assuming you may not be allowed transfer into CS.

Don’t know why you are still waiting on CMU, Cornell, Rice and USC since they all have already released their decisions. If you are saying you are waitlisted at those, you will likely not hear from them until afte May 1. Usual process if one of those is your desired college is to accept elsewhere and change if taken off of waitlist.

When I spoke of transfer I was speaking of changing from your current major to another, a transfer from one department to another at UIUC. Attempting a double major goes through the same process. You have to be accepted into the CS major and the evaluations are the same.
