UIUC - CS vs CompE

Ok, so I have already submitted my application and I have applied for Computer Engineering within the ECE.

Going through the courses, I felt more inclined towards software and I think I would like CS more. Can I change my application now?

And lets say I do get into ECE, how tough is to transfer to CS within the first semester?

Thank You.

It is easier to be admitted into CE than CS. Once you attend, you will need to take classes for a year (typically) before you can apply to change your major. You will have to do very well in your classes to transfer into CS. It is a very competitive major.

Since you have not yet been admitted, you can submit a Program/Term Change form by Jan 12 asking to be considered for CS rather than CE. [U of I Admissions: Application Change Request Forms](Page Not Found, Illinois Undergraduate Admissions)

Just note that above is correct in that right now it is somewhat harder to be admitted to CS than it is to CE. Once admitted to a major you will not be able to change majors until beginning of sophomore year, which change you would request in second semester freshman year. There is no guaranty you can make the change and it must be approved by the CS department and the ability to transfer in will depend on first semester grades and on seats available in CS.

Thanks, but where did you get the Jan 12 date from? It said that the form cannot be submitted after the application deadline. I submitted it nonetheless, but I am not sure if it will be accepted.

it appears they left it off this year’s new deadline pages on the site, but it always is Jan 12 and you can find the date mentioned here http://admissions.illinois.edu/faq/admitted.html and here http://blog.admissions.illinois.edu/?p=12921

I asked a UIUC counsellor. He said the last date is 12th. Thanks!
