I’m wondering if I can drop Spanish 4 or if this would affect my admission decision. I have already signed up for housing and committed to going to Cal Poly. If I drop this class I’ll have extra time so I’m pretty sure I can get a 4.0 with 1 honors class, so that is above a 4.0 weighted (this is from a 3.7ish weighted, so an improvement).

I would enjoy school without this class… why did I take it? I don’t know. I ask myself that question every day. If I am getting nothing out of this class, I don’t see any reason not to drop it unless it will change Cal Poly’s decision. I tried to find the information on CP website but I was unsuccessful. If no one here knows if this could change their decision to accept me I can always call them.

I would only be taking 4 classes, and at my school 5 is the norm for seniors. The max you can take is 7, though. This would give me more time for volunteering at the vet, which will be much more beneficial to my future than Spanish. Thanks so much!

Very good question. I would definitely call because you do not want to jeopardize your admission. My son signed up for AP Spanish his junior year and changed his mind the summer before because he realized he didn’t really like Spanish and probably wasn’t prepred for that level. It was a good decision.

i would definitely call first. I hear they are very helpful at CP admissions. Hang in there!

Thanks for the response… I’ve tried this whole year to just keep pushing through it. I wanted to drop it the first week I had the class, yet I didn’t since there were no openings in electives (and I didn’t want to be a “slacker” to colleges). I just decided now I wanted to drop it since I don’t know why I’m putting myself through all this when it will have no effect on my future (given that Cal Poly will still take me).

I will call them Monday, since I believe they are closed on weekends… I’ll have to check the times. Hoping for good news.

Honestly, I don’t think cal poly will care if you drop Spanish. Most colleges really don’t care about second semester grades at all (unless you get below a C in any class). Cal Poly won’t defer you unless you fail a class. However I think the CSUs require 2 years of a foreign language… so if you have that then i think it’d be fine to drop spanish now.

I had a similar situation. I wanted to drop a class and Cal Poly said that I would have to be reviewed again for acceptance because I had an advantage over other kids. Though, my class was at a community college so that probably made a difference. Anyways, you should definitely call admissions before dropping

I think that’s fair. College made the decision including the senior year schedule. Otherwise, what’s the point to fill out senior year courses in application.

Watermark: do you mean I think that isn’t fair?

I emailed the admissions person. He said they would have to reconsider my admission since my schedule was considered for my acceptance. I’m pretty much right in the middle with my stats so I don’t think I want to take the chance (maybe a little above). Cal Poly is where I’ve wanted to go for the last 4 years, am I just going to throw it all away? I hope not…

It’s not a matter of whether I will get a C or not, I can easily get a B in that class. It is just a completely pointless class, we get an hour of homework daily and in class ALL we do is correct the homework. Most people don’t even correct the homework, they just mark red stars. Sorry about venting, but it frustrates me when I could get out of school at 11:45-12, and go to volunteering at the vet clinic for 2 hours… (they have lunch break so there’s no time to go right now after school). That would give me an extra 2 hours every day!

I love Spanish, which is why I took it this year. I do not love that I have the SAME teacher, the SAME people in my class, and the SAME period!! I doubt they will consider the increase in my grades, either.

Did you list this Spanish class on your CSU Mentor application? If yes, you shouldn’t drop it because Admissions will review your final transcripts to make sure the courses match what was listed on your application. They can rescind your admission for it.

Just suck it up and finish Spanish IV. As long as you get higher than a C (which shouldn’t be hard with three years under your belt already) you’re fine. So what if you won’t have as high of a GPA?

Edit: Just read your post a few up. I still say tough it out. I am required to stay in school until everyone gets out (2:10) so I have to take a bunch of pointless, time wasters too.

I tried to do the same thing, same class even, and was told that they would have to review my application to see if I had an unfair advantage. I decided to stick with the class to not risk losing admittance.
