Accepted - Mathematics major

stats:

gpa 3.8
sat: 1880
act: 26
8 APs through HS

When I first go the e-mail saying I was accepted, I wasn’t too thrilled since I initially thought it was for Cal Poly Pomona. After I found out it was SLO I was delighted.

My dream goal up to this point has been UCLA, but I always loved engineering. With the rising costs of school, I’m leaning more towards SLO. The area is beautiful (looks like Ireland!) and its one of the best engineering schools in the nation.

Just a few questions:

How does the engineering program compare to schools such as Caltech/UCLA/UCB?

I put Mathematics BS as my major… Is this a hard major to join with? I thought majoring in Math would allow me to have a broad field of work in engineering, but there was no “Applied Math” choice. Is it the same thing at Cal Poly? Is it just better to major in _____ engineering rather than math?

the engineering program is ranked top in the country for schools with no doctorate degree, but i’m telling you from personal experience that if you tell someone you go to cal poly slo and ur in engineering, it holds a great value if not moreso than some of those other schools, simply because engineers graduate from slo with many more job offers than any other school…

2)i dont really understand what your asking. You want to be in engineering but are actually accepted as a math major? good luck switching, chances are you wont be able to.

Wow, way to slam Pomona.

Cal Poly’s engineering program is at the top. Like surfboarder said, companies WANT Cal Poly engineering grads as much as you want to work for them. From what Ive heard, UCLA’s and UCSD’s engineering programs are more bioengineering, biotech stuff, they are difficult programs to get into.

Mathematics is in their College of Sciences and Mathematics, while engineering is in a separate engineering school. It would be very difficult to switch schools.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to make it sound like Pomona is a lesser school, its just I lived in Pomona and around it all my life, and I find it really dull over here.

Kinda disappointing how difficult it is switching school majors, ugh. What would I have to do to switch? Would it even be worth the trouble switching?

op9no2: you should try to switch majors as soon as possible maybe after the fall quarter. i remember reading that the only people who have a good chance to switch are people who do it early so they can graduate in 13 quarters.

hope that helps chance me please: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cal-poly-san-luis-obispo/865466-chances-ed-2010-i-will-chance-back.html

switching colleges is nearly impossible i hear. i got in for Mech. E. and am probably gonna switch to biomed. Engineering but that’ll be easier for me because its within my major.

ull have to talk to the cal poly people asap if u wanna switch. i would try and call them tomorrow or something if i were u.

and FutureENTSurgeon im pretty sure ull get in. theres a part on the cal poly application that asks if uve worked with things related to ur major and i think community service at the hospital counts. i hear that stuff like that boosts u up a lot when the people are looking at ur application … good luck
