Accepted - No Financial Aid...

I was accepted to NYU Stern finance but I did not get much in aid. I got the federal loans, but I would have to bear the full cost of tuition.

Is there still a chance to get scholarships? How did previous students deal with this, did they just pay the full cost or take loans?

Same here. it’s a lot of money. I’m not sure what to do.

If NYU was going to award you scholarship, it would have come in your financial aid package. The only way you could get scholarship would be to apply for scholarships from organizations outside of NYU. The general recommendation on attending NYU is that if you have to take on full cost in loans, then do not attend. $60,000 x 4 = $240,000. That means you will be paying around… $2,500/mo after you graduate to pay off student loans. Not a very good investment and very costly.

NYU2013 is right. That amount of debt for a college degree (no matter how prestigious the institution is) is just not worth it; but for graduate school, it is worth it. Don’t overload on the loans now, wait for grad school for that.

You shouldn’t take out substantial debt for graduate school, either - unless you mean professional programs such as law or med school. Those who are pursuing research-based degrees should find a funded program - the rule of thumb is that if you don’t get offered funding, they really don’t want you. Borrowing huge sums for a Ph.D is a horrible idea.

Damn, that’s rough. You could try calling the office of financial aid and petitioning for additional aid, I did that got an extra 1,000 (not much in the grand scheme of things, but better than nothing I suppose)

How is your financial situation? Is your parents’ net income too high to qualify you for financial aid? A lot of times fin. aid is based on residency, are you living in or outside New York? A lot of factors could have determined this, also keep in mind Stern is the most competitive of the NYU schools, so they will be less obligated to offer grants. Your only other option is to consider outside merit based scholarships. Start researching…

same spot, except i applied ED and i’ve already paid my deposit. how do i petition my FA award when i call the office, do i just beg and plead for some money or how does it work?

swimdude,

Did you see my post on the other thread about this topic? Not sure if it answers your question entirely.

[The NYU FA office is known to be rather unyielding with appeals. I was informed by posters last year that the most they may give you is $1000-2000 extra if your appeal is successful. Someone came on this forum recently and encouraged people to try since she got an additional $3000 (the largest I read about with an appeal).

However, NYU does tell you that there is a special form to fill out for appeal if there are significant changes in your family finances due to unemployment, death, divorce, excessive medical expenses, etc. I am not sure how much this affects the financial aid package. No one here has reported on going through this process.

Well my parent’s income is around 150k and I am a California resident. My parents told me that they would cover about half of the expenses but I would have to either find scholarships for the rest or take out a loan and pay it myself.
