Has anyone attended/planning to attend an accepted student reception this spring? The closest one to us is in Mobile AL on March 10th. Just wondering if it is worth an hour's drive and the schedule juggling we would have to accomplish.

I was on the counselor chat last nite and this was one of the issues raised; the general answer was tht it allowed you to see who else was accepted from your area and you got to see a movie about Tulane. I’m going to the one in Houston.

We live in the San Francsico Bay Area and we’re planning on going to the SF reception on 3/16. That’s the day after the March Honors Weekend which we are also attending. I hope it’s not too much Tulane/overload!
The reception is only a couple of blocks from where I work, but DW and DS are coming in from the suburbs. Besides the presentation and the chance to meet our admission counselor (who won’t be there Honors Weekend), we’re kind of interested to see if we happen to know anyone else accepted at Tulane.

I must admit that I am curious to see if anyone else from our area is planning to attend Tulane. As far as we know only one other student from D’s high school has applied, and he was deferred (last update I heard anyway). It would be nice to have someone to share rides home with - we are about 3 hours away in Northwest FL.

We are going 3/9 to the reception on Long Island. I think it’s interesting that of the 4 people posting we are all from different places. For me, that makes Tulane even more desirable.

I agree Vitrac, D was initially interested in Wellesley - did an overnight visit and interview - the whole drill. She was intrigued with the idea of meeting people from everywhere, but it sounds as though Tulane may offer comparable diversity MUCH closer to home.

Will be attending the reception in Charlotte, NC on March 7th. We are really looking forward to seeing who else from our area will be attending or possibly attending Tulane. As far as we know, my d is the only person in our city that is going. (live an hour outside of Charlotte)

Can you all please update on how useful these are? I have a lacrosse game that starts two hours before it and might be able to make it and might not. I want to know if I should hurry or not to make it to the reception.

The reason that we want to go to the reception is because, like I said, we are hoping to see who else from our area will be attending TU. My daughter has already accepted and sent in her deposit, so it’s not going to be a factor in decision making for us. Aws1991, have you already visited TU and are you planning on going to one of the Destination TU events? If the reception is in your town, then I think it would be great to try and make it. Depends on what your reasons are for wanting to attend. Good luck in that LAX game!

Correction: we will be attending a reception in Charlotte on 3/22, not 3/7.

Aws it is strictly a social function. Nice, but you won’t be missing out on anything important info wise.

Is there a list of the receptions somewhere? - dates and locations?

The dates are listed on the admitted students site.

Yeah I’ve visited twice and I’m going to Destination Tulane March 26th. I guess I just want to go to see who else from around here is going. I’m pretty sure I will be there next fall. I think my coach would be pretty cool about me leaving with a couple minutes left in the game to head over there though. I’ll have to ask him.

Well, attending the reception in Mobile is looking doubtful, since it will be tech week for D’s high school musical (they are doing “Anything Goes” not the actual HSM). We are looking at the April 23rd Destination Tulane event, since Jazzfest starts that weeekend and I am ridiculously excited about the possibility of seeing Simon and Garfunkel! (I guess that gave away my age bracket) Surprisingly, D said she would enjoy that too - though I’m sure we will be ditched at the earliest opportunity!

We will be attending a Destination Tulane event on March 22nd (the only time we could make it to NOLA), and will be attending the local event as well. If the DT visit goes well, that will seal the deal for S2.

Just got back from one in Northern Virginia. FallenChemist, I can report that it wasn’t a social function/reception, which was what I was thinking it would be. It was an enthusiastic presentation about Tulane that included the area admissions rep showing a (fairly lengthy) dvd about Tulane from the perspective of five students and numerous professors. Then the rep spoke about why he chose Tulane. This was followed by a few recent grads speaking about why Tulane was special to them and a Q&A.

Having sat through many admissions seminars, my son found this one to be more informative regarding the real spirit of the school. The alumns were a variety – a party girl (who’s currently in law school), a self-described nerd and a hard-working, socially conscious one.

I’d say if students have already visited Tulane or spoken to their area rep during a meeting at high school, they may not get much out of the presentation. We have yet to visit, so it confirmed to my son that he’s definitely interested and is looking forward to touring Tulane.

That’s great UVaHoo. So this is more like a Destination Tulane event for people that might not make it to NOLA, it sounds like. Somehow in my mind I had thought this was more for students that had already decided on Tulane. Not sure why I thought that. Thanks for setting that straight.

Just made reservations for Commanders Palace so the wife and I are set whether the kid is or not.

Great choice, idad. Another great restaurant that is not very well known outside of locals is Clancy’s. It is Uptown, between Magazine St. and Tchoupitoulas St. at
6100 Annunciation Street. The soft-shell crab is incredible as is the oyster and brie appetizer. Reservations definitely recommended.
